ᐅ Are there reinforced shelves specifically designed for BILLY?

Ronnon58Hello everyone,
I have a specific question today: Are there reinforced shelves available specifically for the IKEA Billy bookcase?
I have some heavy books and musical instruments that I want to store, and the standard shelves don’t seem sturdy enough for this.
I’m particularly interested in whether there are any special upgrades or accessories that can make these shelves stronger without having to buy a completely different bookcase.
Maybe someone here is familiar with the dimensions and materials or even has practical experience. I’d appreciate any tips!

I haven’t seen any official reinforced shelves from IKEA, but there are definitely some hacks and third-party accessories that add extra strength to the shelves. For example, stronger MDF boards or even metal frames that you can screw underneath the shelf.
Of course, that’s not exactly original BILLY, but hey – as long as your books don’t fall through, right? 😉
If you’re handy, you can also nail a simple U-shaped steel bracket underneath; that helps a lot.
Looking forward to seeing what other ideas come up here!

However, you could consider the following options:
1. Replacing the shelves with thicker MDF or plywood boards, cut to exact size.
2. Installing metal reinforcements, such as aluminum or steel brackets under the shelves to increase load capacity.
3. Building or purchasing additional cross braces attached to the underside of the shelves.
It is important to take the exact measurements of the BILLY shelves—approximately 32 cm (13 inches) deep and depending on the shelf width—and to carefully calculate the load (maximum kg per shelf).
Secure attachment inside the unit is also crucial to prevent the reinforcements from slipping.
If you can tell me what type and how much weight you plan to put on the shelves, I’d be happy to offer more specific advice.

I mainly have heavy professional books and several music amps and effect units that I want to place on the shelf. The equipment weighs roughly 15 to 20 kg (33 to 44 lbs) per shelf, plus books, so each shelf should be able to hold about 25 kg (55 lbs) plus or minus.
The dimensions are the standard BILLY, 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide and 28 cm (11 inches) deep.
I’m reasonably handy and could install metal brackets if that would be a reliable solution.
Are there ready-made options available, or do many people here use DIY solutions?

Are there ready-made options like this available for purchase, or do many people here use DIY solutions?Hello Ronnon58,
from my experience, most suppliers do not offer special "reinforced shelves" for BILLY that fit perfectly and are IKEA-compatible. The shelves are standardized for the module, so a custom solution is often recommended.
Attaching metal brackets under the shelves is very practical, especially if you don’t reinforce the unit with backing panels. Alternatively, you can replace the existing particleboard shelves with solid wood or thicker boards (e.g., 18mm (0.7 inch) plywood). Some users also build an aluminum frame around the shelves to significantly increase load capacity.
I would advise ensuring the BILLY unit is securely anchored to the wall—this is particularly important for safety and stability under heavier loads.
Do you already have a back panel installed? It also provides additional structural stability.

Screwing metal brackets under the shelves is very usefulI agree with that!
Also, a small tip that’s often overlooked – if you screw sturdy wooden strips under the front edge of the shelves, you can reduce sagging.
And if you’re comfortable with DIY, you can also thread threaded rods through the side panels to clamp the shelf even more tightly.
So, reinforced shelves aren’t specifically available from IKEA, but with some skill and the right hardware, the BILLY can become a real heavyweight! :-)
