Hello everyone,

I am planning to repaint my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets myself to give them a fresh look and customize the color to match my style. Since I have no experience with furniture painting, I would like to ask: How can I repaint Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets myself to achieve a durable and professional result?

I am especially interested in the exact workflow, from surface preparation (sanding, cleaning, etc.), to the type of paint (acrylic, polyurethane, paint marker, spray paint?), to the correct application and drying times. What materials and tools are advisable?

It would also be helpful if you could provide tips for working on the specific surfaces of the Metod fronts (melamine coating, frame profiles, etc.). I want to avoid bubbles or paint peeling later on.

Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!

It is best to first thoroughly clean and sand the surfaces so that the paint adheres properly. Use a primer that is suitable for plastic. Then apply spray paint or paint with a roller in a thin layer. Allow each coat to dry well between applications. Finally, a clear coat is recommended for protection.

Hello KLODOMIN31,

I have painted Ikea Metod fronts myself and can share some important tips with you.

- Melamine and plastic coatings are very smooth and must be carefully sanded (grit 240 to 320) to roughen the surface.
- Use a special plastic primer that creates adhesion bridges. This is crucial for durability.
- PU-based paints are durable and flexible, especially recommended for kitchen cabinets.
- When painting, apply thin layers—possibly three thin coats instead of two thick ones. This prevents drips.
- Allow each layer to dry thoroughly and sand lightly between coats.
- For the final step, a clear UV-resistant topcoat is recommended to make the surface more resistant.

You should also remove all handles and fittings before painting.
As for tools: fine sandpaper, microfiber cloths for cleaning, brushes with synthetic bristles, or a spray gun.

If you follow all these points, you will definitely achieve a long-lasting, good result.

Absolutely right! Don’t get discouraged even if it takes several steps. The final result will be great! I painted my Metod set this way, and every time I see my kitchen, it makes me happy 🙂 Just take it step by step and don’t rush!

In addition to priming and sanding, it is important to emphasize that selecting the right paint is essential. IKEA Metod cabinets usually consist of MDF substrate with a melamine or plastic surface layer, which is why plastic-based paints or polyurethane (PU) paints are recommended.

These paints provide excellent adhesion and durability. Additionally, a wet-on-wet painting technique reduces the risk of blistering. This involves applying the second coat while the first coat is still slightly wet, resulting in an even smoother finish.

An alternative option is a two-component (2K) paint, which is very durable but requires appropriate equipment and experience for optimal application.

Special primers for plastic surfaces are also available from professional suppliers, some of which include additional adhesion promoters (bonding primers). Naturally, all surfaces must be thoroughly degreased before treatment, ideally using a solvent such as denatured alcohol or isopropanol.

Exactly, 2K paint can be great, but it’s not suitable for beginners. It’s better to start with PU paint and apply it using a brush or roller.
