ᐅ What to do if the doors of BILLY shelving units no longer close properly?

FelomiHello everyone,
I have the following problem with my Billy shelf unit: the doors no longer close properly. They stick or remain slightly open, which can be quite annoying for a shelf with doors. The doors don’t appear to be warped, as far as I can see, and the hinges seem to be fine as well. However, it looks like the alignment might have shifted somehow.
Has anyone had experience with this and can offer advice on how to adjust or fix the doors correctly without having to buy new hinges? What other possible causes are there if the doors on a Billy shelf unit no longer close properly?
I look forward to your tips and suggestions!

The doors no longer close properly. They stick or remain slightly open...That sounds really frustrating. I once experienced something similar with one of my BILLY bookcases. What helped me back then was carefully checking the hinges and the door alignment. Even the smallest shifts can cause the door not to fit properly.
I spent some time loosening the hinge screws slightly several times, adjusting the door, and then tightening them again. It took a while, but in the end, everything was flush again.
Maybe this can encourage you a bit – sometimes patience and fine adjustments are enough, even if it’s annoying 😉 It’s also important that the entire shelving unit is firmly assembled, as movement in the carcass can affect the door as well.

Even the smallest misalignments can cause the door not to fit properly. That’s exactly the crucial point. In BILLY shelves, the doors are often attached with so-called concealed hinges that can be adjusted in three directions: vertically, horizontally, and in depth.
My recommendation: Step 1 – remove the door, which usually can be done by gently pulling it out or unlocking the hinges. Step 2 – check the position of the hinges on the cabinet. Hinges are often centered on the cabinet frame but sometimes mounted on the side. Step 3 – loosen the screws, slightly correct the position, then retighten the screws. Even a 1-2mm (0.04-0.08 inches) adjustment can solve the problem.
It’s also advisable to inspect the hinges themselves for damage or worn holes. If the drill holes in the cabinet frame are enlarged, this could cause wobbling and poor closing.
One more tip: with very smooth-operating hinges, you can place small plastic shims behind them to increase the door’s closing pressure. Check if that’s possible in your case.
A few more questions: Have you fixed the shelf to the wall? That improves stability and can reduce closing issues. And are the doors removed when you adjust the hinges?

BILLY shelves often have doors attached with so-called cup hingesNote on cup hinges: These can usually be adjusted in three directions using a Phillips screwdriver:
- lateral adjustment (to close without pressure),
- height (to prevent the door from scraping or hanging unevenly),
- depth (to adjust the closing pressure against the cabinet).
My tip: Check whether the screws on the cabinet and the door are loose. If the holes are worn out, dowels or wood filler can help to restore a secure hold.
It is also advisable to check the overall stability of the shelf unit. A slightly twisted unit can cause the doors to be misaligned. Secure wall mounting significantly reduces this risk.
Summary: Adjust -> check/replace screws -> stabilize the shelf unit. Cost-effective and efficient.

Did you fix the shelf to the wall? No, at the moment the shelf is free-standing in the room, without any wall fixing. That could have an effect, right?
So far, I haven’t removed the doors; I wasn’t sure if that would be straightforward.

If they are loose, anchors or wood filler can help to provide a new grip. Thanks for the tip, I’ll check that.
I’ll try to remove the doors and adjust the hinges systematically when I get a chance.
Is there anything else I should watch out for if the doors still cause problems after adjustment?
