Hello everyone, my IKEA Billy bookcases have doors that have started to open and close with quite loud and annoying squeaking over time. I’m interested in what really works to make squeaky hinges on Billy doors silent and long-lasting. Are there specific lubricants or home remedies that actually work? Or do the hinges possibly need to be replaced completely? It would also be important for me to know if the hinges should be cleaned or prepared in any way before applying lubrication to ensure a lasting result. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

A very simple first step is to spray the hinges with WD-40 or a similar multipurpose oil. While WD-40 is a good starting point, its lubricating effect does not last very long. For flat-pack doors, I recommend, after cleaning the hinges (preferably with a lint-free cloth and possibly some isopropanol to remove dirt and old residues), using a special long-lasting silicone grease or graphite powder. These products ensure that the hinges are not only lubricated but also less prone to getting dirty and squeaking quickly.

Whether the lubrication should be cleaned or prepared somehow before applying anything, so the result lasts longer. That’s an important point because dirt or old residues significantly reduce the effectiveness of lubrication. Also, be careful to apply the grease sparingly; too much lubricant can attract dust and worsen the problem. I have personally had very good experiences with silicone spray, which is applied and then allowed to settle briefly.
To be honest: let’s be realistic, this creaky hinge issue is often greatly overrated. I often wonder whether it’s really worth investing so much time and money into these small cabinet door hinge problems.
I agree with that, but don’t you just have to accept that these simple doors will get a bit annoying over time? You could also consider whether a newer model with better hinges might be more worth the money than constantly fiddling around.
Of course, it’s hard to understand if you’ve experienced the fundamental frustration, but I see this as normal and not a huge problem.
Is there anyone here who really claims to have permanently won the battle against creaky hinges? Or is it always a test of patience?
