Hello everyone,

I am currently considering assembling an Ikea Brimnes bed myself but want to use a particularly secure and long-lasting fastening method. Therefore, my specific question to the community is: What fastening methods are optimal for the Ikea Brimnes, especially regarding the connection between the individual bed parts as well as a stable anchoring in the room?

I am not only interested in Ikea’s assembly instructions but also in tips on how to significantly improve durability and safety with additional screws, wall plugs, or other fastening materials. Does anyone have experience with retrofitting reinforcements, possibly special screws or adhesive techniques that work especially well with the Brimnes? Any advice on fastenings that prevent wobbling or warping would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Basically, you should follow the provided assembly instructions, as Ikea designs the components for the included dowels and screws. However, it is recommended to use self-tapping chipboard screws instead of the simple wooden connectors when joining the side panels and the headboard. They provide a firmer connection and reduce play.

For anchoring the bed in the room—especially on laminate or wooden floors—better anchors depending on the wall material are advisable, such as heavy-duty anchors for concrete or specialized cavity anchors for drywall. Be sure to install an anti-tip device as Ikea specifies.

Additionally, applying wood glue at the joint surfaces can increase stability, if you do not mind the bed being somewhat more difficult to disassemble later.

I would use screws with a larger diameter, as the Ikea wall anchors are often somewhat weak. Also, always use anti-tip brackets on the wall, regardless of whether it’s masonry or drywall.

I can only confirm that; otherwise, the Brimnes will eventually stand like a swaying ship at the quay!

Another thing I thought of: rubber or felt pads under the feet also help reduce stress on the floor and keep things stable. Basically, a comfort booster for safe night rides 😄.

My tip: If you want it really stable, you should add #6 or 7 particle board screws alongside the original fasteners. They do require a bit more care when pre-drilling but provide significantly better hold.

And if you rub the screws with wood glue, you get a really strong bond – almost like a piece of solid wood furniture.

Tilt and edge protection is essential for Brimnes. Especially if there are children in the house, nothing should be loose or wobbly.

Chipboard screws are recommended multiple times, yes.

Always use tilt protection. Consider the wall structure and choose the appropriate anchor set.
