Hello everyone, I would like to convert my Ikea Besta shelving unit into a lowboard for my TV. My main goal is to keep the height low so the TV is at a comfortable eye level from the sofa while achieving a stable and visually appealing piece of furniture.

Since the Besta system offers many variations, I’m unsure of the best approach to get an elegant lowboard look. Specifically, I am wondering:

- Which cabinet versions and legs work well as a base for a lowboard?
- How can I modify the back panel or sides to neatly hide cables?
- Are there any tips for adapting door or flap mechanisms to suit a media setup?

I would appreciate any helpful experiences, recommendations, or information on the exact process and parts needed.

At 40 cm (16 inches) height, it makes sense to use just one cabinet level and possibly plan it a bit wider and deeper instead.

That sounds reasonable. I originally wanted two levels for more storage space, but the height might become too large.

Thanks also for the tip about the back panels and cables. Should I remove the original Ikea back panel or just modify it to create cutouts?

I’m also unsure how to avoid overwhelming the room’s feel with the doors. Would it be better to use open shelves or closed doors with a push-to-open system? What would you recommend?

If you really want a very low-profile sideboard, go for a cabinet box with wide compartments and use sliding doors or flaps with push-to-open mechanisms. This keeps the look light while still providing enough storage space behind the doors to hide cables and electronic devices.

Open compartments often reveal messy cables, which can look cluttered—unless you can organize everything very carefully.

Back panel: Remove the original back panel and replace it with a thinner board that has suitable cutouts for cables and ventilation. This creates a more modern appearance and is more practical for everyday use.

If you want two levels, you need to consider the height. 40cm (15.7 inches) is barely enough for two cabinet levels. It’s better to go with one level and plan it wider. Cutting out the back panel for cables is fine; that works well.

I built my Besta lowboard with a cabinet depth of 64cm (25 inches) and added feet about 10cm (4 inches) high underneath. This automatically set the board at the perfect TV height.

I would recommend closed doors to keep dust out and to make the devices less visible. This creates a tidy look and makes it easier to keep the front of the furniture clean. Push-to-open works great for that.

Regarding the back panel: I modified the original back panel by adding cutouts for cables in the areas with a lot of equipment. This keeps everything stable while hiding cables and keeping them well organized.
