Hello everyone, I’m currently looking into the PAX wardrobe system from IKEA and wondering if these wardrobes can be expanded modularly at a later stage. Specifically, I’m interested in whether it’s possible to add extra components such as shelves, drawers, or side panels to an existing PAX wardrobe without having to dismantle the entire unit. Does IKEA offer any corresponding extension options or modules that can be purchased separately, and how does this work in practice? Does anyone have experience with flexible upgrades or modifications of PAX wardrobes?

Basically, PAX systems are modular; the frame components and interior fittings can be purchased separately and combined. You can definitely add extra elements later on, such as additional shelves, drawers, or clothes rails. However, it is important to note that the external frames (such as sides, back panels, and doors) are usually sold as fixed units. For example, if you want to increase the width or height of the wardrobe, you will need a new frame or a suitable extension element. For smaller adjustments within the existing frame, this is not an issue – there is a wide range of shelves, interior organizers, and accessories available that are compatible. It is important to pay attention to the dimensions and appropriate fittings, as not all modules will fit easily for later expansions.

I would like to add a brief guide on how to expand PAX wardrobes modularly:

1. First, carefully measure the dimensions of your existing PAX wardrobe frame.
2. Then check the current IKEA catalog or online to see which interior fittings and extensions are compatible.
3. For larger expansions in width or height, it’s advisable to purchase an additional carcass or frame.
4. Inside, you can easily add shelves, drawers, and organizers. The great thing is that these elements can be directly hung or screwed into the existing system.

Common mistakes:
- Buying interior fittings that do not fit the existing frame system.
- Overlooking stability when attaching additional units, for example, missing connecting elements between two wardrobe frames.

In short: Yes, PAX can be expanded modularly, but the frame dimensions set practical limits. The interior fittings are very flexible.

Yes, PAX can be expanded modularly. Accessories can be added inside later. Width or height can only be changed by using a new frame.

Great topic! I expanded my PAX two years ago with additional drawers and doors – it’s really easy because IKEA offers many compatible modules. You just need to pay attention to the dimensions. Assembly works well! I can only encourage you to give it a try if you want to customize your wardrobe flexibly. 😊

That sounds good. I’m still wondering about stability when expanding later on. For example, if I attach a cabinet to an existing PAX unit, are there any issues with assembly or stability? Do you need special connectors or mounting hardware for this?
