Hello everyone,

I recently bought several Malm wooden furniture pieces from Ikea and now want to clean them properly and, above all, protect them effectively to keep them looking good for a long time and prevent damage from moisture, stains, or scratches. My specific question is:

How can I clean Malm wooden furniture correctly without damaging the surface or drying out the material? Which products are best suited (e.g., special care oils, waxes, or cleaning agents), and how often should these maintenance treatments be applied? Are there differences depending on whether the furniture is lacquered or oiled?

I would also like to know how to prevent general wear and tear, such as scratches from everyday use or water marks.

If anyone has experience with Ikea Malm furniture or similar wooden furniture, I would appreciate concrete tips and advice regarding care and cleaning.

Thank you in advance!

I can relate to this very well, Carmenja, especially when you have new furniture and want to care for and protect it in the best possible way.

I agree with you—stay away from harsh cleaners! In my experience, a slightly damp cloth with a mild, neutral wood soap cleaner works best. Always follow up by wiping with a dry cloth to avoid trapping moisture.

For my oiled furniture, I occasionally use a special wood oil from a professional supplier, which provides necessary protection and nourishes the surface. For lacquered furniture, I would avoid oils and instead use waxes or furniture polish that protect the lacquered finish.

It always reassures me to know that I am giving my furniture the best care with these maintenance practices. ;-)

For cleaning and maintaining Malm furniture, it is important to know whether the surface is lacquered or oiled, as these finishes require different care.

Lacquered surfaces:
- Clean with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth
- Use mild, pH-neutral cleaners (without alcohol or solvents)
- Avoid prolonged wet wiping to prevent swelling
- For maintenance, furniture wax or a special lacquer care product can be applied every 3 to 6 months

Oiled surfaces:
- Also clean with a slightly damp cloth; avoid harsh cleaning agents
- For wear and tear, re-oil with suitable wood oil about 1 to 2 times a year
- Important: oils penetrate and protect from inside against drying out and stains

General tips:
- Do not place hot or wet items directly on the furniture without a protective layer
- To prevent scratches, use felt pads under objects
- Water stains usually occur from standing moisture; therefore, dry quickly

The most common mistake is using aggressive household cleaners or abrasive sponges that damage the surface.

I have a quick addition for you, Carmenja! 😄

That’s a great tip. I think it makes a lot of sense for oiled wood because it helps the furniture look "well cared for" and keeps that natural appearance.

Also, don’t overdo it with maintenance products! Too much oil or wax can leave a sticky residue or attract dust. It’s better to use them sparingly and regularly rather than applying a thick “layer” occasionally. This keeps the look fresh and is good for your Malm furniture. 😉

Oh, and for scratches, sometimes a carefully chosen furniture care cloth can work wonders without much effort.

Hello Carmenja,

I have put together a brief guide to help you clean and protect your Malm wooden furniture properly:

1. Identify the surface:
- Malm with a lacquered finish: These pieces usually have a satin-matte lacquer.
- Malm with an oiled finish: Less common, recognizable by a slightly “less smooth” feel.

2. Cleaning:
- For lacquered furniture, use a damp (not wet!) cloth, optionally with a mild dish soap. Never use abrasive cleaners.
- For oiled furniture, use only a lightly dampened cloth, no soap.

3. Care:
- Lacquered furniture can occasionally be treated with furniture polish.
- Oiled furniture should be treated as needed with an appropriate wood oil (e.g., linseed oil or a special maintenance oil). Lightly sand the surface first with fine sandpaper (320 grit).

4. Protective measures:
- Do not place hot or wet items directly on the furniture; always use coasters.
- Felt pads under items that are moved help prevent scratches.

5. Frequency:
- Clean weekly or as needed.
- Apply oil every 6–12 months depending on wear.

Common mistakes include using too much cleaning agent, leaving furniture wet, or not drying it properly.

If you have any more questions, I’m happy to help!

Brief and concise:

- Regularly remove dust with a dry cloth
- Do not use aggressive cleaning agents
- Clean with a damp cloth, then wipe dry immediately
- Use wood oil for oiled furniture (1-2 times per year)
- Use furniture polish for lacquered furniture
- Avoid direct heat or moisture on the surface
- Use felt pads under objects to prevent scratches
