Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series, including a sideboard and nightstands. Since I have pets (a fairly active dog and two cats), I’m concerned about proper care and protection of the furniture in everyday use. My question is: What is the best way to maintain IKEA Hemnes furniture in a household with pets so that the surface isn’t damaged, scratches are minimized, and the furniture stays looking good for a long time?
Are there any specific cleaning products or care tips you would recommend when dealing regularly with cat claws and dog hair? I’m looking forward to your experiences and helpful advice!

Hello,
first of all, it is important to know that the IKEA HEMNES series is usually made of painted pine wood, which is relatively sensitive to moisture and scratches. For households with pets, I recommend the following:
- Regular dusting with a soft, slightly damp cloth without aggressive cleaning agents
- Special furniture polish for painted wood to protect the surface
- Protective covers on furniture edges or scratch protection films for heavily used areas
- For cats, a scratching post helps to maintain their claws in a suitable place
It is important not to use abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the paint finish.

For cats, a scratching post helps them maintain their claws in an appropriate place This is truly the most important point! It’s essential to remember that cats naturally need to scratch. If they don’t have alternatives, they will turn to furniture. A sturdy scratching post placed within easy reach of the HEMNES dresser can significantly prevent scratches there.
I also recommend regularly wiping down furniture carefully – not too wet! – otherwise the surface can swell or become dull. For dogs, it helps to keep them off the furniture or protect their favorite resting spots with blankets.
For those who want to be absolutely sure, consider using furniture protection films. These are transparent and protect surfaces from scratches and dirt.
I love my HEMNES furniture, and my two cats also love climbing on it! ;-) What helped me a lot: I placed durable mats and blankets on the main surfaces when the cats have their winter coats. Additionally, small applications of furniture polish are great for making the furniture shine and hiding minor scratches! Give it a try, it really works well 🙂
