ᐅ Malm chest of drawers doesn’t close flush – how can I fix this?

Hello everyone, I have a Malm chest of drawers from IKEA, and the drawers do not close flush. Specifically, the drawer is not properly aligned in the slide rails, so in some places it protrudes slightly or does not close completely tight. This makes the chest look untidy and the drawer also feels a bit stiff when opening.

I suspect that either the slides are misaligned or the drawer itself might be slightly warped. My question is: what steps can I take to correct the drawer’s operation? Are there specific adjustment screws available for the Malm chest of drawers? Or should I rather check and realign the entire slide mechanism?

I would appreciate any tips on the exact procedure or personal experiences!

I can recommend a simple procedure here if you haven’t tried it yet:

1. Completely remove the drawer.
2. Thoroughly clean the drawer slides – dust and dirt often accumulate, affecting the movement.
3. Slightly loosen the screws on the drawer slides.
4. Hang the drawer into the slides without tightening the screws and adjust it until it sits flush.
5. Carefully tighten the screws again.
6. Perform a function test by opening and closing the drawer several times to ensure smooth operation.

Note: If the drawer itself is warped, it cannot be properly adjusted. In that case, replacement should be considered.

In my experience, the drawer slides are the most common issue with the Malm chest of drawers. Sometimes the assembly isn’t perfectly accurate, especially if the chest is placed on uneven floors or against uneven walls, which can cause a slight tilt.

I recommend leveling the chest first by using a spirit level to check if it is perfectly horizontal—a tilted position can affect the drawer mechanism. Then, align the drawer slides at the same height and install them parallel to each other.

Loosen the drawer slide just a little, then insert the drawer and tighten the screws again.

Thanks for the tip, I will try that right away today.

That also makes sense; I was too rough on the topic and didn’t remove the rails at all. I’ll report back after testing this tonight.
