Laurensku11 Feb 2022 08:47Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of fitting my new IKEA Hemnes furniture into my small apartment in the most space-efficient way possible. Specifically, I need to accommodate the Hemnes TV bench and the Hemnes wardrobe in a single room that is no larger than 12 m² (130 ft²).
Does anyone have experience with how to best handle the rather “classic” dimensions of the Hemnes series to make the most efficient use of the space? I am thinking about special assembly methods, alternative placements, or perhaps repurposing some of the individual pieces.
It would also be important for me to get tips on how to maintain an open and uncluttered feel despite the size of the furniture, as the room serves as both a living and working area.
Looking forward to any helpful advice!

For the TV stand, which is relatively wide, it is advisable to place it close to the wall and near power outlets to avoid cable clutter and keep the usable floor area clear.
For cabinets, it often helps to position the shelves so they best fit the items you actually plan to store—for example, more shelves instead of hanging rods if you want to store books or folders there.
Furthermore, I recommend considering the optional installation of shelves in the Hemnes cabinets and using smaller boxes or baskets if needed. This makes organization easier and contributes to better space utilization.

Hello Laurensku,
I solved exactly your issue last year. It is important to know the exact dimensions of your furniture and room very precisely and to create a corresponding sketch. The Hemnes TV bench is usually about 180 cm (70.9 inches) wide and 48 cm (18.9 inches) deep; the cabinet varies depending on the model, but for example, a Hemnes 2-door cabinet is around 90 cm (35.4 inches) wide and 51 cm (20.1 inches) deep.
My advice:
- Mount the TV bench as flat as possible against the wall. If possible, use wall brackets to increase the distance from the floor. This creates storage space underneath for flat boxes.
- The cabinet should be placed facing forward, with the back side touching the wall at most. Slightly offset positioning (e.g., 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) gap from the wall) can help if you have cables or a radiator.
- Use the entire height of the cabinet with the adjustable shelves. When assembling, make sure to insert additional shelves to avoid unused space.
- Consider whether the cabinet doors can open against each other to make access more room-friendly.
One more tip: Hemnes wood is robust, so you could also consider taking the furniture apart and reassembling it if Ikea offers accessories or replacement parts, for example, to use it as a sideboard or shelving units.
I would also be interested to know what main function your cabinet should serve – clothes, books, devices? That strongly influences the design.

The cabinet will mainly be used for everyday clothing and some laundry, so primarily hanging garments and a bit of folded laundry on shelves. Books and folders are mostly stored in a different shelving unit.
I haven’t considered wall mounts directly at the TV stand yet, but that sounds reasonable. I’m just a bit unsure since the wood in the Hemnes series is comparatively heavy – what technical aspects should I pay attention to if I want to use such wall brackets?

Also, pay attention to the maximum load capacity of the wall brackets. The IKEA cabinets can hold several kilograms, so plan for at least 20–30 kg (44–66 lbs) load per wall fixing. Use at least two attachment points per piece of furniture.
If you have a drywall partition, additional reinforcements are necessary; it’s best to consult a professional.
One final tip: screws should not be placed too close to the edge of the wood to prevent the material from splitting. IKEA’s assembly instructions already provide good guidance on this.
