Hello everyone,

I have noticed that some screws in my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet have become loose after a relatively short time. This not only affects the stability of the furniture but could also lead to more serious damage in the long run. My question is: How can I properly fix loose screws in IKEA Metod furniture so that they hold securely over time and I don’t have to keep tightening them?

What I know so far: The screws are usually fastened into particleboard or engineered wood, which can reduce the durability of the threads. I have heard of different methods, such as applying wood glue into the hole, using longer screws, or inserting special dowels.

I look forward to tips, clear instructions, or experiences on how to technically resolve the problem of loose screws in Metod furniture without damaging the item or voiding the warranty. Thanks in advance!

I find this question very relevant, as many underestimate the issues with screws in particleboard. Before immediately resorting to simple solutions like wood glue or longer screws, it’s important to identify the actual cause:

- Are the screw holes already worn out or damaged?
- Has the cabinet actually been subjected to loads that cause screws to loosen?

Wood glue alone is often not enough, since it can swell the material but doesn’t create a lasting strong bond. Longer screws may only partially fix the problem if the board material is already weak.

My general recommendation is to first clean out the holes, then fill them with a suitable wood filler or epoxy resin (especially if warranty is no longer a concern). Once fully cured, new screws can be inserted which will then provide a truly firm grip.

One could argue this is more effort than just tightening the screws again, but in the long run it definitely offers the best stability.

I recommend the following if screws become loose:
- Unscrew the screw
- Fill the hole with wood shavings and wood glue
- Allow it to harden
- Reinsert the screw

This often holds better than just tightening.

The Metod series primarily uses engineered wood panels, which can deform under load and weaken the screw connection.

To properly repair loose screws, I recommend the following procedure:

- First, carefully remove the loose screw to avoid further damaging the hole.
- Fill the hole with repair materials suitable for engineered wood, such as wood filler or two-component adhesive.
- Alternatively, repair dowels made of wood or plastic can be inserted into the hole to create new internal threads.
- After the filler or adhesive has fully cured, the screw can be reinserted. Use screws of the same or slightly larger diameter.

Avoid simply tightening the screws again without additional measures, as this will not improve stability and will cause the hole to degrade further.

Warranty claims remain valid as long as only original replacement parts are used and no modifications are made to the furniture structure.
