Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA Malm nightstand that wobbles when weight is applied. It’s not just a slight play; the piece of furniture feels generally unstable as soon as something is placed on it, like a lamp or a book. I have already checked the screws, and they all seem to be properly tightened.

I am especially interested if there are common weak points with this model, such as joints that tend to loosen easily, or if additional reinforcements might be advisable.

Does anyone have experience or technical knowledge about possible causes and proven solutions or best-practice tips to improve the stability in a lasting way?

I look forward to concrete suggestions! Thanks in advance.

Wobbling can often be caused by slightly loose screws or wooden dowels that are not flush.

Check all screws carefully and tighten them. Sometimes, re-gluing the dowels can also help. If possible, you can also attach small felt pads under the feet if the floor is uneven.

Hello Latebu,

your issue sounds like a common weakness in the Malm series. The wobbling effect is often caused by the back panel of the nightstand being attached only with small nails, which provide little lateral stability. Additionally, the connecting strips and dowels sometimes aren’t secured enough under load, leading to play.

I recommend the following precise steps:

1. Check the back panel: Make sure it fits snugly and no nails are loose. If they are, you can selectively replace them with small screws that offer better hold.

2. Tighten screws firmly: Especially at the corner joints where the side panels connect with the top board. Ikea furniture tends to loosen slightly here.

3. Use wood glue as a supplement: Carefully apply a bit of wood glue to the dowels and clamp everything to stiffen the connections.

4. Optionally install small angle brackets: You can fit these inside to reinforce the corner joints without significantly affecting the appearance.

Are there any visible gaps or even cracks along the joint edges of your nightstand? That could provide further clues.

This is exactly why I often view IKEA furniture critically. Of course, it’s affordable and practical, but with such minimal construction effort, I often wonder if someone might eventually need more stable solutions without having to completely break it apart.

Perhaps it would be better to replace the back panel with a thinner plywood board and attach it differently. Wobbling is a design issue, not a user error, in my opinion.

Naturally, no one expects ‘perfect’ carpentry here, but a bit more stability really doesn’t cost much.

Hello everyone,

To effectively fix wobbling on a Malm nightstand, it is important to focus on the interaction between the back panel, screw connections, and any contact points with the floor.

In addition to the tips already mentioned: please check the back of the nightstand to ensure the back panel is fully flush. If it is loose or too small, the structure loses a lot of stability.

A small but often underestimated factor is the floor surface. Uneven floors can cause the furniture to rock—here, furniture pads or felt gliders usually help very well.

Finally, make sure to tighten all screws with a torque wrench or at least carefully and without overtightening to avoid damaging the material.

If you like, I can also recommend specific reinforcement brackets that are discreet and make the whole thing even more stable.
