ᐅ What can be done about squeaky door hinges on Billy furniture?

andersenHello everyone,
I have noticed that the door hinges on my IKEA Billy bookcases regularly squeak when I open or close the doors. The issue occurs on several units and is quite annoying.
I suspect it is related to the metal parts of the hinges or their mounting, but I am unsure which method would be the most effective way to fix it.
Does anyone have experience with permanently and efficiently eliminating the squeaking on Billy cabinets? What lubricants or maintenance measures work best for this?
I would prefer not to buy complete replacement parts if there is a simple, cost-effective solution.
Thanks in advance for any helpful tips!

In general, squeaking in door hinges is often caused by friction between metal parts or insufficient lubrication. The following approach has proven effective for the Billy furniture:
1. Open the door carefully while checking the hinges to see if the screws are tight.
2. Slightly tightening the screws can often help, as looseness leads to uneven stress.
3. Silicone spray or sewing machine oil works well for lubrication. WD-40 may provide temporary relief but is not ideal because it repels oil and does not provide lasting lubrication.
4. Apply the lubricant directly to the moving parts of the hinges either by spraying or using a dropper.
5. After applying, open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
Regular maintenance every few months also helps prevent squeaking.

Basically, squeaking in door hinges is often caused by friction between metal parts or insufficient lubrication. That sums it up well. I’d like to go into a bit more detail because, with Billy furniture, there are specific factors that can cause the squeaking.
The Billy hinge mechanism is usually made of zinc-plated steel, which is prone to friction damage when not lubricated. Additionally, small wood shavings or dust buildup inside the hinge mechanism can make the squeaking worse.
Here are the steps I recommend for a lasting fix:
1. Clean the hinges: Remove the door, wipe down the hinges, and if needed, use a small brush or cotton swab to remove any deposits.
2. Lubricant: For a long-lasting effect, Teflon-based sprays work well and also repel dust.
3. Check the mechanism: Make sure all screws on the door and cabinet are evenly tightened. Misalignment can increase stress on one hinge point.
4. Repeat testing: After lubricating and reassembling, open and close the door several times. Sometimes it takes a while for the lubricant to take full effect.
Also, have you tried detaching the doors completely to make access easier? This greatly simplifies cleaning and lubrication.

I also ask: Have you ever taken the doors off to access the area more easily?Thank you for the detailed explanation!
So far, I haven’t removed the doors yet, but I assumed that it’s relatively simple to do so with Billy cabinets. Do I need to be careful to avoid damaging anything?
Also, I’m curious whether I should avoid using the doors for a few hours after applying the lubricant to allow it to penetrate properly, or if I can start using them again immediately?
What exactly do you mean by Teflon-based spray? Are there specific product names or terms I should look for at hardware stores or online?

I haven’t taken the doors off yet, but I thought it would be relatively simple to do so with the Billy cabinets.Detaching the doors on Billy shelves is indeed straightforward. The hinges usually have a bayonet lock mechanism. Simply flip the small metal lever on the hinge and lift the door upwards off the hinge.
Regarding lubricant: A classic Teflon spray, for example "WD-40 Specialist Dry PTFE," is ideal. It provides long-lasting lubrication and doesn’t attract dust.
When to use it: Once you apply the lubricant, you can use the doors immediately. Before the first use, it helps to open and close the doors 5–10 times so the spray spreads evenly.
Following this method should quickly eliminate the squeaking.
I once had the same problem with my Billy shelf – the squeaking was not only annoying but also really tested my inner perfectionist 🙂
What worked really well for me was a combination of thorough cleaning followed by treatment with graphite spray. Graphite powder is a dry lubricant that works great against annoying squeaks without the worry of oily residue.
A quick tip: Make sure to ventilate well while applying and then move the doors back and forth until everything runs smoothly.
Sometimes cleaning the surrounding areas helps too, since dust often accumulates around the hinge and makes the noise worse. Good luck!
