henrikson26 Sep 2023 08:43Good morning everyone,
I am currently looking closely at the Ikea Hemnes series, especially focusing on the color options available for these pieces of furniture. My question is quite specific: Are there any color variations of the HEMNES furniture that are particularly popular or have proven to be practical and timeless from a customer perspective?
I am mainly interested in real-life experiences with the different colors – for example, how durable they are, how well they fit into various interior styles, and whether some colors tend to go out of fashion faster or show stains more easily.
Maybe someone here has concrete experiences or recommendations that hold up over time? I would also be interested to know if Ikea itself or customers have noticed any trends regarding these colors.
I’m looking forward to the discussion!

The HEMNES series from Ikea is offered in several color variations, with the classic white finish being the most popular and considered timeless.
- White/white stained: Versatile, suits both modern and traditional interior styles, reflects light well, making smaller rooms appear larger.
- Black-brown stained: Favored for bolder design concepts, looks elegant but can show small scratches more easily.
- Brown stained: Has a more rustic appearance, popular for country-style interiors.
Statistically, white remains the number one choice. This version is easy to maintain and resistant to most everyday wear and tear, as long as the recommended cleaning products are used.
Other colors are often selected based on how well they fit the specific room context but are not quite as universally popular.

Some time ago, I chose the white option and find it very pleasant, especially because it makes the space feel welcoming.
However, I have noticed that with small children or pets, white surfaces require particularly careful maintenance, otherwise dirt or small scratches become noticeable quickly. This is definitely something to consider when choosing a color if you don’t want to clean constantly.
Perhaps this is why some people prefer the darker black-brown, even though it appears more dominant visually.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has had similar experiences with other colors?

I find it interesting that white is highlighted here as the most practical color.
That may be understandable, but how reliable are these statistical conclusions really? Ikea doesn’t publish exact sales figures by color, do they? I would like to see data from customer surveys or reviews that compare durability in terms of scratches, sun exposure, or everyday wear.
Because: a classic shade of white has the disadvantage of looking diminished quickly if the surface yellows or discolors. Are there any reports about this specifically for HEMNES?
Furthermore, I wonder if the darker options like black-brown tend to perform better against visible dirt or fading, as koduga mentioned, or if the opposite is true.

Good morning, I would like to add some basic information that may be helpful in the discussion about color options for the HEMNES series.
Firstly: The surfaces of HEMNES furniture are not painted but are usually stained or covered with melamine foil. This means:
- The stain partly penetrates the wood, giving it a natural appearance and increasing the durability of the surface, even with scratches.
- Melamine foil is more resistant to water and stains but often looks less natural.
Another factor is lightfastness: Dark colors like black-brown absorb more light but can fade when exposed to sunlight. The white version reflects light better but tends to yellow more over time when exposed to prolonged UV radiation.
Therefore, when choosing a color, it is recommended to consider not only aesthetic aspects but also the environment, for example:
- Direct sunlight exposure
- Use by children or pets
- Interior style (modern vs. country house)
Ultimately, white and black-brown are the most purchased options, with white dominating in urban, bright apartments and black-brown being more common in country house or classic settings.
