Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA PAX wardrobe system in the kids’ room and want to childproof the doors to prevent our little whirlwind from constantly messing everything up or possibly injuring themselves with heavy items. However, I don’t want to simply seal the doors shut with hard-to-open hinge locks. I’m looking for a secure, practical, and as discreet as possible solution that works well with PAX doors.

Does anyone have specific experience or recommendations for childproof locking mechanisms that actually work on PAX wardrobe doors? Are there any particular products you use or maybe your own DIY solutions? It’s also important to me that adults can still easily open the doors without having to completely remove or damage the locks all the time.

I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello leeta1,

There are several proven methods for childproof locking of PAX wardrobes:

- Magnetic door locks: These are installed on the inside and are not visible. They can only be opened with a magnetic key, which is held by adults. Advantage: no visible changes to the wardrobe, childproof, and relatively easy to install.

- Cabinet latches with child safety lock: These are mounted on the outside of the doors, mechanically robust, and prevent unintended opening. It is important to pay attention to quality and fit to avoid damage to the material.

- Self-adhesive clamp locks: A low-cost option, but less durable and often bypassed by very curious children.

It is important that the mounting can be removed without residue, in case the wardrobe is used differently later.

I recommend taking a closer look at magnetic locks, as they work best with PAX wardrobes with smooth doors and are visually unobtrusive.

Hello leeta1,

I’d like to take things a step further and provide you with a detailed guide on how to make the PAX doors childproof safely and without causing damage.

First, the analysis:
PAX doors are usually made of lightweight wood or wood fiberboard with a smooth surface. To create a childproof lock, you need to ensure that it:
- is not visible or minimally affects the appearance
- does not cause drill holes or noticeable damage
- can be opened quickly and easily by adults

Recommended approach:

1. Install magnetic child safety locks (e.g., from reputable manufacturers like Safety 1st or IKEA itself) behind the door. Magnet mounting works well for PAX doors since they are hollow and provide enough space.
2. When mounting, make sure the magnet and latch are precisely aligned. Otherwise, the door might get stuck or fail to close properly.
3. Optionally, install a soft-close mechanism to prevent slamming.
4. Use only the existing screw holes or adhesive strips that can be removed without residue during installation.

One more tip: use a small drilling template or tape as a guide to avoid misaligned mounting.

If you enjoy DIY projects, it is also possible to experiment with sturdy nylon straps or snap locks fixed with screws, as long as these are placed inside the wardrobe and do not leave marks on the outer surface.

The best option also depends on your tool access and personal interest in technology. I’m happy to provide further technical details if you want to go through the process step by step.

Buy magnetic locks, open them with a magnetic key. Simple and reliable. Available directly from IKEA or at hardware stores. Install, align properly, done.

Hello leeta1,

here is a brief tutorial on installing the magnetic child safety lock on PAX wardrobe doors:

- Preparation: Close the doors and carefully determine the best position for the mechanism. This is usually above or beside the handle.
- Clean the surface to ensure better adhesion for glue or double-sided tape.
- Fix the lock in place with tape and test whether the magnet releases the latch with the rod when opening.
- Attach the lock permanently according to the instructions, either by gluing or securing with screws (if you want to avoid damage, gluing is preferable).

Common mistake: Installing too close to the edge; this often causes the doors to no longer fit exactly or the lock to come off quickly with frequent use.

Conclusion: It’s worth testing a few times before final attachment. And yes, magnetic locks usually work best with PAX.

This is a very important point. Additionally, the inner surfaces of the door should be thoroughly degreased before installation to ensure a lasting hold.

I agree with this, but would add that with magnetic systems, the strength of the magnet should be considered to ensure they remain childproof and cannot be opened accidentally by hand pushing.

It should also be taken into account that when several PAX cabinets are in the same room, having separate keys or magnetic keys for each is advisable to avoid mix-ups.
