I’m currently considering upgrading my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit with acrylic glass doors. I like the visual enhancement that transparent or lightly tinted acrylic glass provides, creating a more modern and elegant look. However, I’m unsure how durable and practical these doors really are in everyday use—especially regarding stability, installation, maintenance, and long-term benefits such as dust protection and visibility of the contents.
Does anyone have experience with custom-fitted or ready-made acrylic glass doors for KALLAX units? Is the investment worthwhile in terms of quality and user-friendliness? Are there any pitfalls or recommended sources?
I look forward to your constructive feedback and tips!

How durable and practical are acrylic glass doors for everyday use—especially regarding strength, installation, maintenance, and long-term value?Hello,
I’ve been focusing intensively on upgrading KALLAX units for some time and have tested several options, including custom-made acrylic glass doors. The doors are generally quite stable: acrylic glass is significantly lighter than real glass and more resistant to breaking. However, acrylic tends to warp quickly if installed improperly, so it really needs to be cut precisely to size. For installation, I recommend either using the original IKEA or third-party mounting kits, or taking exact measurements and having the pieces professionally cut.
In terms of maintenance, acrylic glass is fairly low-maintenance but can get superficial scratches if handled roughly. The best approach is to clean it with a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth, avoiding any harsh cleaning agents. Over the long term, the acrylic does a great job of keeping dust out, which is especially beneficial for KALLAX units without doors. Additionally, acrylic’s transparency creates a more elegant, open feel in the room.
My tip: If you want a high-quality appearance, choose slightly tinted acrylic glass, which subtly tones down the visibility of the contents without hiding them. This works very well in contrast with white or black KALLAX units.
If you’re planning to make the acrylic glass doors yourself, I can gladly share tips on how to measure and install them precisely to avoid binding or warping.
Feel free to share how exactly you plan to use the doors—do you want them to be lockable, or just to provide visual cover? That will help me give better advice.

Installation was easy, the doors are sturdy enough and provide good dust protection.I agree with that 🙂 At first, I had doubts about how Plexiglas would look over time, but it definitely has the wow factor, especially when you display some nice decorations or a book collection. A little tip: lightly tinted Plexiglas doors not only protect against dust but also help to hide any clutter on the shelves – kind of a "friendly cover" 😉

For installation, I recommend taking precise measurements and going for professional cutting.Absolutely, a crookedly cut door panel doesn’t just look bad, it’ll get removed quickly. It’s worth spending a bit more time on preparation, it really pays off.
I have been using my Plexiglas doors for over two years now, and they still look like new. Just clean them with a soft cloth, that’s it. Overall, it’s a great addition to KALLAX if you want to give the standard furniture a modern touch. 🙂
