Hello everyone,
I have an Ikea Billy bookshelf that makes a creaking noise when opening the doors. It mainly comes from the hinges and seems to be more of a mechanical creak rather than a noise from the wood or similar.
I assembled the bookshelf just a few months ago, and it is firmly positioned against the wall. My question is: what could be the reasons for the creaking noise when opening the doors of my Billy bookshelf? I am particularly interested in whether it could be due to material fatigue, incorrectly adjusted hinges, lack of lubrication, or another issue.
Thanks for your insights!

Which lubricant can you recommend?I once had a creaky shelf as well. For me, a light lubricating oil helped. However, I first removed the doors, cleaned the hinges, and then applied a light oil coating. It might sound simple, but sometimes taking a short break and reattaching the hinges with the right amount of pressure makes a difference.
I understand how annoying it can be, especially if you use the shelf daily. Patience and a systematic approach were the key for me.

Hinges not screwed in completely straight, causing pressure marksI think it’s important to question this point: Was the shelf assembled by an amateur? Is it a case of faulty installation, or are the hinges slightly stressed from the factory?
If the creaking continues even after lubrication and tightening, one should consider whether the material has deformed. Possibly, there are stresses in the particleboard that require relaxation—so keep the doors open for an extended period without any load.
Also, are there differences in the creaking with changes in temperature or humidity? That could indicate material behavior.

Are there differences in creaking at different temperatures or humidity levels?Good point. I have actually noticed that the creaking is more pronounced during the colder, drier days in winter compared to summer.
I will start by checking the screws and treating the hinges with silicone spray. If that doesn’t help, I will leave the shelf open for a few hours to relieve any material stresses.
Thanks for all the helpful tips so far.
