Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Platsa shelving unit and am considering how to easily and effectively modify it to better suit my living space and interior style. It is important to me that the changes are not too complicated or expensive but still create a noticeable improvement in the atmosphere and appearance of the room. I am particularly interested in which materials or methods work well for altering the surface (e.g., painting, applying adhesive covers, or other techniques) and how to smartly make use of the modular design of the Platsa system in the process. Additionally, I would like to know if there are any tried-and-tested DIY tips to make the storage more functional without having to buy costly accessories. Who has experience or concrete advice on simple yet effective ways to transform the Platsa shelving unit?

The transformation of an Ikea Platsa shelving unit can be most easily achieved through the following measures:

- Surface: The unit is usually made of laminate, which can be effectively repainted using special laminate paint or acrylic lacquer. The surface should be carefully sanded and cleaned beforehand.
- Covering: Self-adhesive films or furniture wraps offer a flexible and cost-effective option for visual changes. It is important to avoid air bubbles during application.
- Modularity: The Platsa modules are stackable and combinable, allowing you to create new room dividers or niches by rearranging them. Additional parts such as shelves or doors can assist with this.
- Storage optimization: The usability can be significantly improved with shelves, baskets, or drawer inserts; homemade inserts made from plywood are an affordable alternative.

These methods are well documented and require only basic DIY skills. The focus should be on surface preparation and planning the new layout to achieve optimal results.

Simply sand the shelf and repaint it with a matte finish.

Alternatively, use self-adhesive films, which are available in many designs.

Additional boxes or baskets as interior fittings improve storage space.

I believe that when redesigning a Platsa shelving unit, it is important to first carefully assess the available space and your individual needs.

That is exactly the key: use the modular components to restructure the shelving – often it is enough to simply rearrange the modules or add doors and inserts. This also has a positive effect on the feeling of the room, as it reduces visible clutter.

For painting, I would recommend using chalk or lime paint. This gives the furniture a matte, almost velvety surface and is relatively easy to work with. Canvas stretcher frames for applying or cutting adhesive films are also practical tools.

Regarding storage space, custom-made inserts from lightweight wood are a good option; these can be easily cut and painted.

If you have any questions about the practical implementation, I’m happy to help.

A shelf doesn’t always have to stay white or beige – adding color instantly freshens things up.

I once painted a Platsa with matte chalkboard paint, which not only adds color but also creates a really cool, usable surface – you can write on it!

That’s true, I’ve used wood-grain films myself – they look classy and are easy to apply if you work carefully.

And hey, the modular design is like Lego – just try it out, rearrange, expand, it’s really fun.

Sometimes just adding a few new handles or pulls (that’s what Ikea calls handles) on the doors is enough to refresh the look.

The surface of the Platsa shelf is melamine-coated, so I recommend using high-quality sandpaper (grit 180–220) before decorating. Without proper sanding, paint does not adhere well.

For color choice, acrylic paint works well because it is flexible and less likely to chip.

Another recommendation is to use accessories from the Ikea range itself: tube and basket systems that fit precisely into the Platsa modules significantly improve organization and usability.

If the budget is tight, homemade wooden shelves are an affordable option if you have some DIY skills.
