SufateHello everyone, I have a Kallax shelf from IKEA that I mainly use for books and decorations. I’ve noticed that the lower compartments regularly get very dusty, even though I clean the shelf regularly. The bottom compartments are especially problematic, where the dust quickly builds up into a thick layer. The apartment isn’t particularly dusty otherwise, and I can’t really track down the source of the dust. Does anyone have tips on how to better manage the dust issue, especially in the lower compartments? Are there any special cleaning techniques, prevention methods, or practical tools for these open shelves? I would appreciate any experiences or advice!
Dust in lower shelves usually comes from air currents that stir up dust particles, as well as pollen and fibers blown in from the floor. It is important to clean the floor thoroughly and occasionally wipe down the wall behind the shelving, as dust often accumulates there. Some users recommend antistatic sprays that reduce dust adhesion. Alternatively, curtains or clear covers can be installed to protect the compartments.
I would recommend paying attention to the humidity levels in the home in addition to regular cleaning. Air that is too dry promotes dust formation. Additionally, occasional ventilation is important to reduce potential dust sources caused by dry air or poorly ventilated areas. Sometimes it also helps to slightly move furniture away from the wall to prevent dust buildup behind the KALLAX shelf.
Dust at the bottom of the KALLAX? The only solution: from now on, start dusting with a feather duster and vacuuming regularly! 😉 Jokes aside, here’s a tip from me: place some closed boxes at the bottom to limit dust from spreading freely. And wipe it down thoroughly from time to time – that way, you'll have less dust in your face next time.
To specifically reduce the dust problem, I recommend the following approach: First, check how much clearance the KALLAX shelf has from the floor, as direct contact with the floor promotes dust accumulation. Use special microfiber cloths to remove dust more effectively, since these cloths capture dust better than regular rags. Additionally, I suggest filling the compartments with decorative but closed fabric boxes or baskets, which remain open enough to maintain the look but prevent dust from entering. If possible, regular checks of the air filters in the room heating or air conditioning system can also help, as poor filter performance increases the amount of dust in the air. Are your windows mostly open, or do you use a lot of ventilation? High air circulation can do both: either spread dust or remove it.
