HanstarHello everyone, I want to set up an Ikea Besta shelf unit, but I am either unable or unwilling to drill holes to fix it to the wall. My question is: How can I securely and stably attach a BESTA shelf unit to the wall without using holes or wall anchors? My main concern is ensuring stability, as the shelf will also be loaded to some extent. What alternatives to drilling are available? I look forward to helpful tips and experiences!
Hello Hanstar, your concern is quite interesting, as many people want to protect their walls but still need stability. One option is using tension or clamp systems that wedge between floor and ceiling. With IKEA BESTA, there is no official direct solution, but you can still be creative. It is important that the shelf not only fits tightly against the wall but is also stable against tipping. My recommendation:
- Use non-slip rubber or felt pads under the shelf to increase grip on the floor.
- Use tension rods that extend from floor to ceiling (similar to tension shelves). These can also be attached to the shelf frame with brackets or angle profiles.
- Alternatively, heavy-duty adhesive tapes or mounting adhesives can be used, provided the wall surface is suitable and they can be removed without residue.
A quick question: What wall materials do you have? Drywall (plasterboard), concrete, plaster? This significantly affects the available options.

the shelf must not only be firmly secured to the wall but also be stable against tipping. Absolutely essential, otherwise you’ll have more trouble than enjoyment! I once stabilized my BESTA using adjustable furniture shims and additionally secured it on the back with strong hook-and-loop pads – basically a DIY anti-slip system.
Of course, no drilling involved, but it’s not suitable for heavy-duty use. For light use, though, it works great and looks neat.
Hello Hanstar, I want to share a structured method for securing your Ikea BESTA shelving unit without drilling, to ensure tip resistance and stability.
1. Preparation: Measure the room height and the width of the area where the shelf will be placed. Stability greatly depends on the precise fit.
2. Use tension rods: An adjustable tension rod wedged between floor and ceiling can provide significant stability without drilling. There are models available that are rust-resistant and sturdy.
3. Connect to the BESTA unit: Use brackets (e.g., small light metal brackets) that are attached to the shelf and clamped onto the tension rod at the same time. This prevents tipping.
4. Floor grip: Place non-slip felt or rubber strips under the shelf. Especially on smooth floors, these greatly improve stability.
5. Optional: If the wall surface allows, you can apply strong adhesive mounting tapes to the back of the shelf. These are generally not designed for very heavy loads, but they help with adhesion.
Common mistakes: Especially with drywall (plasterboard) walls, adhesive tapes often do not hold up under load. If your walls have plaster or wallpaper, you should test the compatibility of the adhesive materials.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask—I can help you select suitable tension rods!

Hey Hanstar, this topic is really interesting! I secured my BESTA with transparent furniture clamps that I attached at the top of the shelf using a clamping mechanism, and it stands against a smooth wall. I also placed non-slip pads underneath, and it has been holding very well for months now!
Definitely give it a try and don’t give up if it feels a bit wobbly at first – a little experimenting and adjusting is worth it. The good old "no-drill" method is still alive! 🙂
