Hello everyone,

I am planning to get a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and assemble it myself. Since I am not very experienced with DIY projects, I would like to get some tips or advice beforehand on what to pay special attention to during the assembly.

I am particularly interested in whether there are common mistakes or pitfalls to watch out for, and if there are any helpful tricks that can make the assembly easier or improve the process. It would also be useful to know if I should have specific tools ready that could facilitate the work, and if there are different models that require different assembly steps.

Who here has experience with the Billy bookshelf and can share some recommendations? Thanks in advance!

That is a sensible approach. In principle, you should carefully follow the instructions step by step during assembly, but I wonder if you are aware of how stable this shelf really is under load? People often underestimate the load capacity of the shelves and the strength of the material. Do you plan to load the shelf with particularly heavy or bulky items?

This can influence whether you should consider buying extra screws or brackets to reinforce the structure.

Good point! 🙂 The BILLY is definitely a classic, but depending on how you use it, it can sometimes be a bit wobbly. When assembling it for the first time, I would always make sure to screw the back panel in firmly and straight, as that provides a lot of stability.

Also, a little tip from me: while a screwdriver is included, using a cordless drill makes the job much faster and easier. And for the small dowels and screws, don’t tighten them too much, otherwise the wood can tear out more easily!

Tools: Cordless drill or a good Phillips screwdriver. Unpack everything completely and check the parts. Attach the back panel straight. Align the wall plugs properly. Speed during assembly helps.

In addition to the points already mentioned, I recommend not placing the shelf directly against the wall but firmly securing it with screws. This prevents it from tipping over, especially when there are children or pets in the house.

I fully agree with that! Also, you can use the small plastic stoppers on the back panel. They help prevent the shelf from twisting when tightening the screws. Sometimes you see people being too rough with it, and in the end, the shelf ends up crooked.
