Hello everyone,

I am considering how to convert IKEA Hemnes furniture into a guest bed, as I don’t want to have a separate bed just for guests. The HEMNES bed frame is quite solid, but I’m wondering if, for example, one of the dressers or bed frames could be repurposed to serve as a quick and stable guest bed—perhaps with an additional sleeping surface or folding mechanism. Does anyone have experience or ideas on how to modify the furniture so it can be used as regular furniture during the day and function as a guest bed at night? I look forward to suggestions, preferably with instructions or advice on the necessary materials. Thanks!

I would recommend equipping the HEMNES bed frame simply with a thin mattress topper and a mattress. The dressers are not designed for this purpose. A folding mechanism requires a certain level of craftsmanship.

The idea of converting an IKEA HEMNES dresser into a guest bed is technically complex. Here is a more detailed overview:

- Standard HEMNES dressers usually have a depth of 48 cm (19 inches) or less, which is clearly too narrow for a lying surface.
- If you own a dresser with a depth of 80 cm (31 inches), theoretically you could modify the top section and, for example, install a pull-out sleeping surface.
- The HEMNES bed frame, on the other hand, is sturdy and already provides suitable attachment points.
- My recommendation: If you have a HEMNES bed frame, you might consider converting it into a daybed or guest bed by attaching a foldable slatted base or using a double-fold mattress.
- Alternatively, you could reinforce a drawer under the bed frame and equip it with a firm cushion.

It is important to check the structure for stability and avoid overloading the furniture material.

Thanks for the tip! So the bed frame is basically the most suitable option. The dressers are less suitable as a lying surface or are too narrow. How about a combination of a bed and drawers for storage and a sleeping area? IKEA seems to offer this design in some of their models.

Good morning!

Here is a simple guide on how to turn the HEMNES bed frame into a comfortable guest bed:

1. The base is the standard HEMNES bed frame (90x200 cm (35x79 inches)).
2. Instead of the standard mattress, use a foldable guest mattress that can be easily stored during the day.
3. For extra support under the mattress, use a sturdy slatted bed base, which can be reinforced on the sides if needed.
4. You can install IKEA HEMNES storage drawers under the bed, ideal for storing bedding and pillows.
5. If space allows, a thin foam topper can be added to make the sleeping surface more flexible.

A common mistake is using slatted frames that are too thin, causing them to bend. Also, regularly check the connecting screws as they can loosen over time with frequent use.

Summary: HEMNES bed frame plus foldable mattress plus sturdy slatted bed base plus drawers – this is the best combination.

Dressers are not suitable as guest beds because the sleeping surface is inadequate. It is better to equip the bed frame with a guest mattress and store bedding underneath.
