Hello everyone,

I have been using IKEA Billy shelves for some time now, but I’ve been experiencing several issues such as uneven load capacity, unstable edges, and significant sagging over the full shelf width. Therefore, I’m very interested in knowing: What alternatives to Billy shelves are available when these problems occur frequently? I’m specifically looking for solutions that are more stable, possibly modular, and offer better long-term quality in terms of materials. Maybe someone knows of comparable shelving systems or stores that offer more robust products with similar flexibility? I’m looking forward to your experiences and advice!

Why always rely on IKEA? BILLY is practical but cheaply made – and you definitely notice that after a few years. If stability is really the priority, it’s worth checking out Maisons du Monde or even specialized furniture workshops. They often offer higher-quality materials and better joints.

Also: why simply replace BILLY? Instead, you could consider improving individual weak points – for example, using stronger shelves. But I understand if the entire shelf doesn’t satisfy you. In that case, a completely different system makes sense, such as solid wood modules or metal frame shelves that are less likely to bend.

Hello,

for more stable shelves instead of BILLY, I recommend the CLH shelving system from Rollcontainer24 or the sturdy range from MUJI. They are a bit more expensive but more durable.

Metal shelving units from CONFORAMA are also an alternative. They are more robust if load-bearing capacity is often an issue.

As an addition: In the classic BILLY shelf issue with sagging shelves, adding extra middle supports or metal brackets often helps. However, this is only a temporary solution. For a more durable and stable option, you should consider wooden shelves with solid boards and well-dimensioned side panels.

Modular systems from manufacturers like USM Haller come at a higher price but offer very sturdy construction and flexible adaptability. Additionally, there are increasingly affordable custom-made solid wood furniture options from European craftsmen that are strong and long-lasting.

Hello Levinka,

I understand your issue well – BILLY shelves are popular but have some weaknesses regarding stability and material thickness. As an alternative, I recommend choosing shelving systems made from solid wood, for example the “LACK” system from IKEA, which is not fully solid either but becomes more stable when combined with wall fixings.

Besides that, home improvement stores often offer modular shelves made of metal and wood that can carry much heavier loads. There you can specifically focus on load capacity and have the shelves cut to size individually. Proper wall mounting is also essential – it adds a lot of stability.

If you want further help: what kind of loads do you primarily want to store? Books, decorations, heavy equipment? That way, the best alternative can be recommended.

Primarily books and binders, along with occasionally larger binders that can weigh several kilograms (pounds). Decorations play a minor role. The shelves should therefore not sag or appear unstable, especially when fully loaded. I have already noticed with BILLY that the shelves tend to bow, particularly at the 80cm (31.5 inches) width.

While metal shelves seem more stable to me, I often find them visually intrusive in a home setting. Therefore, I am looking more for wood or wood-based materials that are of higher quality craftsmanship.
