Hello everyone,

I recently bought an Ikea Brimnes shelving unit and am planning to store some heavier items on it. However, I’m not sure how much weight a single Brimnes shelf can actually hold without damage or bending.

Specifically, I’m interested in: What is the maximum load capacity of one shelf under normal use? Which factors affect the load capacity, such as material thickness, shelf width, or even weight distribution?

If anyone has practical experience or technical information from Ikea on this, that would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice.

According to the manufacturer, the maximum load capacity of a single Brimnes shelf from Ikea is approximately 13 kg (29 lbs) when the weight is evenly distributed.

It is important to note that the material is MDF, which has a certain load limit and can bend or, in extreme cases, break if overloaded. The width of the shelf affects its stability, as wider shelves can support less weight than narrower ones unless they have additional support.

The distribution of the load is also crucial: heavy items should be placed as centrally and evenly as possible on the shelf to avoid point loads.

If a higher load capacity is required, it is recommended to use additional supports or shorter shelves.

I have a Brimnes shelf myself. I would recommend a realistic load of 10 to 15 kg (22 to 33 lbs) per shelf.

It’s better to distribute heavier items across multiple shelves.

The material is relatively thin and does not tolerate point loads well.

That sums it up well. To add a bit more:

- Ikea generally specifies a safe load capacity of about 10 to 15 kg (22 to 33 lbs) for Brimnes shelves.
- It is important to ensure that the shelves are correctly inserted and securely locked in place to guarantee even load distribution.
- If you plan to place books or heavy equipment on the shelves, try to distribute the weight as evenly as possible to prevent the shelf from bowing.

Since Brimnes is mainly made from coated particleboard (MDF), the material itself is not designed for high point loads. If you intend to store exceptionally heavy items, you might consider reinforcing the shelf or choosing a model with thicker, more robust shelving.

This point is crucial:

- Material thickness for Ikea Brimnes shelves is relatively thin by default (about 1.8 cm (0.7 inches) MDF), which limits the load capacity.
- The shelf width influences bending; wider shelves experience more deflection under load.
- Even weight distribution is the most important factor. Concentrating heavy loads in one spot can cause damage.

In addition to the manufacturer's specifications, I recommend only applying loads close to 10-13 kg (22-29 lbs) per shelf temporarily. For permanent loads, it’s best to stay below these values and reinforce the shelf if needed (e.g., by adding extra supports or metal brackets).
