Hello everyone,

I am looking for a gentle and practical way to safely transport my Ikea Besta furniture for a move and, if necessary, repack it. Specifically, I want to partially disassemble some of the furniture pieces while leaving others intact, aiming to make the transport as careful as possible without damaging the surfaces or putting unnecessary strain on the construction.

Are there recommended methods or materials that work especially well to protect the smooth, coated surfaces and edges of the Besta units from scratches and pressure marks? I am also interested in the best way to store the individual parts to ensure the transport is both space-efficient and secure.

Any tips on suitable packing materials, disassembly/reassembly, and ideal handling during packing would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Danlu,

first of all: very good, precise question! My tip: bubble wrap is your best friend here – it effectively solves the problem with scratches in no time. Also, try wrapping furniture pieces that you don’t want to disassemble with soft blankets or foam padding; especially the corners!

When packing, always remember: don’t stack too much or press too hard, otherwise the finish won’t be happy. And if you like, give the edges some extra protection with foam edge guards, which you can find at hardware stores.

Good luck with your move, you’ll manage just fine! 😉

For a furniture-friendly transport of the BESTA units, the following is recommended:

- Disassemble the furniture as much as possible at the specified connection points to reduce stress on the materials.
- Wrap individual parts with protective film or bubble wrap to prevent mechanical damage.
- Use lint-free blankets or special furniture fleece on the surfaces to avoid abrasion.
- Avoid tight straps around delicate surfaces; instead, use hook-and-loop fasteners or loose blankets that do not cause pressure marks.
- Stack the parts so that neither weight nor edges can cause pressure damage.

The reusability of the connectors can be preserved by carefully loosening them—using appropriate tools and documenting the disassembly is advisable.

This approach effectively minimizes the risk of scratches and deformation.

This is a very important tip! I often see people using overly tight straps or plastic wraps, which later cause unsightly pressure marks or small tears on the edges.

Additionally, I recommend storing all screws, anchors, and small parts in labeled containers or bags to prevent losing anything during reassembly. Damage often occurs when parts are missing and improvisation is necessary.

Also, when handling surfaces—especially smooth fronts—wearing white cotton gloves helps avoid fingerprints or dirt that could interfere during packing or cause stains later on.

I have successfully transported several BESTA combinations during moves without damage by following these steps—it's definitely worth the effort!

Use bubble wrap, foam corner protectors, and preferably soft blankets.

The furniture should be disassembled and the individual parts transported flat to avoid pressure.

Don’t forget to keep screws in labeled bags.
