Hello everyone, I am planning to get an Ikea Platsa cabinet system but I’m unsure about one thing: Is it possible to change the colors of individual elements in the Ikea PLATSA system, meaning can you swap out the fronts or other colored parts afterward or repaint them? I’m especially interested in the options for flexibly adjusting the system’s colors without having to buy completely new parts. Does anyone have experience with whether this is practical at all and which parts might be better suited for this? Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hey, great question! As far as I know, PLATSA is designed to be modular – so you can definitely swap out the fronts as long as you can find the right replacement parts. Ikea offers various front colors that you can also buy separately. Repainting is possible too, but keep in mind the surface is melamine-coated, which can make it difficult for paint to adhere properly. If you decide to customize the color yourself, I’d recommend thoroughly preparing the surface and using a special primer. Either way, there is definitely flexibility without having to replace everything completely. Good luck with your project!

You can replace the fronts individually with PLATSA, yes. Painting is technically possible but labor-intensive due to the coating.

Hello Ustoto,

to answer your question in detail: The Ikea PLATSA system is actually designed to allow old fronts or side panels to be replaced with new ones. This makes changing colors much easier. However, the parts are coated with melamine or plastic, so paint, for example, will not adhere easily. If you want to paint them yourself, having a good base is very important: you would need to sand the surface first and then apply a primer specifically made for smooth surfaces. Alternatively, you can use adhesive surfaces if you want to do it yourself or discuss options with a suitable tradesperson.

From personal experience: It’s worth checking Ikea’s replacement fronts first – they are often cheaper than entirely new cabinets and save a lot of work. If you need flexibility, you can consider different color schemes since various colors and materials are also offered.

I hope this helps!

I once had a PLATSA system where I changed the fronts – and it’s really fun to switch the colors depending on your mood! 😊

Replacing them was super easy – just remove the old fronts and attach the new ones. I haven’t tried painting them, but if you’re a bit handy, it should work fine. I’d recommend testing on one corner first before tackling the whole piece of furniture. 👍

So: Yes, you can change the colors, and it’s easier than you might think!

Replacing fronts is normally possible with PLATSA. Painting requires preparation, sanding, and priming.
