Hello everyone,

I recently installed Ikea Metod kitchen fronts and have noticed that the doors close quite loudly. My question is very specific: How can I mount or retrofit the Ikea Metod doors to achieve a soft-close function?

I’m not just looking to replace the dampers, if possible. Maybe there are also tricks related to how the doors themselves are attached or special hinges I can use?

I look forward to practical tips and real experiences specifically with Metod doors. Thanks in advance!

Thanks already for the various inputs!

A quick question to everyone: I currently have simple clip hinges installed, not soft-close hinges. Is it necessary to replace them entirely with soft-close ones, or is there a way to retrofit damping to the existing hinges?

I want to minimize effort and cost but also achieve a noticeable improvement.

Retrofitting damping to the existing simple clip-on hinges is technically challenging and usually not effective. The piston mechanism in soft-close hinges ensures the damped closing. Retrofit kits for older hinges are rarely available and often do not provide a satisfactory solution. Therefore, it is recommended to replace them with soft-close hinges that are specifically designed to fit Metod doors.

Exactly, that is the best and least complicated method. This way, you don’t have to worry about the damping being of poor quality or uneven.

Interesting, but I wonder: does using soft-close hinges also mean compromises in long-term durability? The additional dampers are wear parts. Does anyone have experience with how durable they are and how often they need to be replaced?

I would prefer a practically sustainable solution that doesn’t require adjustment or replacement after just 1-2 years.

That's true, but I think it's a fair trade-off for the quiet and smooth closing. Honestly, with normal use, the dampers last well beyond just a few years – at least 5 to 7 years is realistic.

It gives the kitchen a relaxed atmosphere, almost like yoga for the doors 😄.

Regarding durability: Ikea’s soft-close hinges are generally sturdy, but the damping components may wear out over time depending on use and load. Proper installation and occasional cleaning of the hinge mechanism are important.

Another tip: Instead of replacing the entire hinge, some models allow you to replace only the soft-close module if it’s worn out. This can be more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Conclusion: With proper care, the dampers can last several years, sometimes even over a decade.
