Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific question regarding the IKEA Platsa furniture series. I’m planning a setup that I want to be able to move easily and with minimal effort during future relocations or transportation. Therefore, I’m particularly interested in whether there are individual modules or combinations within the Platsa series that are especially easy to transport—that is, not too heavy or bulky—and that can be taken apart and reassembled flexibly due to their construction.

My concern is less about complete disassembly and more about a practical solution that takes up little space during transport and isn’t too heavy to handle at once. Perhaps someone is familiar with the dimensions and materials of the various Platsa elements or has practical experience with transporting them.

I would appreciate any concrete advice or recommendations on specific modules that are especially suitable for this purpose. Thanks in advance for your help!

Regarding your question about the easy transportability of IKEA Platsa modules: Essentially, the individual components, such as boxes and frames, are designed for modular use. Standard modules like 60x40 cm (24x16 inches) or 80x40 cm (31x16 inches) are relatively manageable and usually weigh around 12–18 kg (26–40 lbs), depending on the material and features.

It is important to note that the modules can be disassembled without tools, which makes transportation easier. However, this furniture series mostly consists of particleboard with a foil coating, which is sensitive to moisture and impacts. Therefore, careful handling during transport is necessary.

A small tip: individual boxes are lighter and easier to handle than fully assembled cabinets – so it’s better to transport the individual boxes and reassemble them at the destination.

Yes, the 60x40 cm (24x16 inches) boxes are easy to transport. They are lightweight and stackable. It is best to transport them disassembled.

I’d like to go into more detail about transporting the IKEA Platsa modules, as this was a major issue during my last move.

First, the basics: the modules are actually designed to be easy to assemble and disassemble. Assembly is based on snap-fit connections combined with screws, where the screws are minimal and quite easy to remove, making disassembly practical. The dimensions of each box are very important—they are roughly 60 or 80 cm (24 or 31.5 inches) wide and 37 cm (14.5 inches) deep. The height varies depending on the version, ranging from shallow drawer units to taller carcasses with fronts. The weight is usually between 12 and 20 kg (26 and 44 lbs), which means they can be carried alone with some effort. However, it quickly becomes unwieldy when multiple modules are combined.

One important tip: when transporting, it’s essential to avoid damage to the delicate surface. Therefore, it’s recommended to cushion the edges well or wrap the modules with protective packing material. Also, the ability to open boxes and remove individual inner drawers significantly reduces the overall weight.

Another point: due to the relatively standardized dimensions and modular system, the components can be conveniently separated into combinations. For example, a larger carcass with drawers can be disassembled into individual drawers and the frame, with the drawers being very light and easy to handle.

Do you have any specific requirements, such as how often the transport will take place or the transportation methods you plan to use? This would help provide more tailored advice.

Hi Mindo41,

I once had a similar consideration and then decided on the smaller Platsa modules because they are really easy to transport with only 12-15 kg (26-33 lbs) per unit and the practical plug-in assembly.

As Parbo already mentioned, always be careful to protect the edges. For example, I used old blankets and bubble wrap to avoid any damage.

A little tip from me: The 40 cm (16 inches) depth allows them to fit relatively well through standard doors. And since they are rectangular, they stack nicely, which makes transporting them in the car much easier.

Exactly, putting in a little effort when packing pays off!

In addition to the practical tips, I would like to point out that besides the weight, the ease of handling during transport should not be underestimated. The grip areas on the sides of the Platsa boxes make them easy to hold, which simplifies lifting and carrying.

Furthermore, the modular design allows the boxes to be transported individually. For large combination systems, it is advisable to stagger the transport and move the individual modules one after the other, rather than transporting entire combinations at once, as these can be unwieldy and prone to damage.

For frequent moving or relocations, it might be worth considering whether the system can be further protected with special transport bags or boxes to save time and effort.
