ᐅ Is there a way to extend the Pax wardrobe by adding a narrow side panel?

Neo45Hello everyone, I am considering expanding my IKEA Pax wardrobe by adding an extra narrow side panel. Specifically, I am interested in whether there is a practical way to modify the wardrobe so that I can attach either a very narrow side wall or a slim element to the existing basic structure, in order to gain more storage space in a limited room situation. My idea is whether such an extension can be achieved, for example, with special connectors, additional side panels, or custom-made parts, without significantly compromising stability or appearance. Has anyone had experience with the best way to do this, or are there official IKEA modules or replacement parts available for this purpose? I would appreciate any tips or recommendations. Thank you!

There are no official narrow side panels or extension components that can simply be attached to the existing structure. If you want to add a narrow side panel, you will have to improvise. For example, you can screw a thin wood or MDF board onto the existing side panel or connect it to the frame using suitable brackets. It is important not to overlook the structural stability – the wardrobe cannot handle heavy loads from additional attachments without extra reinforcement. Alternatively, some users place a separate narrow wardrobe next to it and connect them with screws if needed. This offers more flexibility and security.

Make sure to measure exactly and fix everything evenly to avoid problems later with doors or shelves. For stability, I also recommend making the modifications on the inside whenever possible, to avoid weakening the cabinet’s load-bearing corner.

I decided to go with a custom-made wooden board, which I secured using clamps and angle brackets. It’s not a perfect IKEA-style upgrade, but honestly, it finally gave me the extra storage space I needed. I recommend taking it slow and not underestimating the weight. I sympathize with you when looking for a solution like this, as space is often very limited.
Let's be honest, the question about a narrow extension for the Pax wardrobe is also typical of the IKEA system: mass-produced furniture designed for standard dimensions aims to serve a universal purpose, but individual room situations are less taken into account. Especially when it comes to something fine and custom-made, IKEA can’t really keep up. Maybe a screw connection or wooden panel is okay, but that is more of a DIY solution. Why not plan a closet setup with suitable custom elements from the start, instead of relying on forced modifications?
