darian52I plan to repaint some Ikea Besta fronts and want to achieve especially smooth and even surfaces. My question to the community is: Are there any special tips or techniques you would recommend to prevent streaking and to ensure a very smooth, professional finish? I am particularly interested in the best way to prepare the surface, which types of paint are suitable, and how you handle the application to achieve the best uniformity. I look forward to your experiences and advice!
Hey darian52, that’s a really good question! In my experience, preparation is key when painting the Besta fronts. I would recommend:
- Thoroughly cleaning and degreasing the fronts
- Lightly sanding with fine sandpaper (grit 220 or finer)
- Using a primer that matches the paint (for example, acrylic-based)
Applying the paint with a good spray gun is very helpful for achieving a smooth surface. Of course, it takes some practice – but the difference compared to using a brush or roller is noticeable. 😄
Definitely spray several thin layers instead of one thick one; this gives you much better control!

I would like to share a structured guide that worked well for me:
1. Preparation:
- Lightly sand the fronts with 400-grit sandpaper to roughen the surface.
- Remove dust with a lint-free cloth.
- Degrease using a silicone remover or rubbing alcohol.
2. Primer:
- Use a high-quality household primer suitable for MDF and melamine surfaces.
- Clear acrylic-based primers are recommended.
- Apply thin and even layers, then allow to dry completely.
3. Painting:
- Use spray paint or a spray gun, for example, acrylic paint with a satin finish.
- Apply several thin coats with 15-20 minutes drying time between each.
- Lightly sand between coats with 600-grit sandpaper, but be very gentle.
4. Final finish:
- Allow the last coat to air dry for at least 24 hours.
In summary: Patience is key, avoid applying thick layers, and above all, carry out each step carefully.

Applying paint with a good spray gun is really helpful for a smooth surface. I basically agree, but the spraying technique and distance are crucial. A spray gun can easily apply too much paint, which leads to drips. It is important to work in long, even strokes and keep the gun consistently about 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) away. I’m also curious: Darian52, which type of paint do you plan to use? Water-based or solvent-based? This significantly affects drying times and the final result.
