Hello everyone, I own several Malm furniture pieces from Ikea, which I really like in terms of design. However, I have noticed many small scratches on the surface after a short time. This is especially frustrating with the dressers, as the finish doesn’t seem to be very durable. My question is: How can I make Malm furniture more scratch-resistant without changing its appearance? Are there specific products or methods to protect the surface without making it glossier or duller? Additionally, I would be interested to know if there are long-term solutions that can be applied by myself, without having to completely disassemble or repaint the furniture.

As a supplement: I recommend sealing Malm furniture with a special clear lacquer for furniture surfaces, based on acrylic, which dries with a matte finish. This is durable and significantly increases scratch resistance. It is important to thoroughly clean and lightly sand with very fine sandpaper (grit 400-600) before application so that the new layer adheres well. This measure is especially worthwhile for visible damage. For larger surface applications, it is best to use compatible products that do not damage the lacquer.

In addition to the maintenance products already mentioned, I recommend polyurethane protective films. They are transparent and protect against scratches without altering the appearance. However, they are not always easy to apply and require a clean surface beforehand.

Use furniture wax and coasters. Do not place heavy objects directly on surfaces. This effectively prevents scratches.

An additional sealant with a polymer-based furniture care product can improve resistance.
I fully agree! This is the secret, everyone! 🙂 Polymer-based care products provide excellent protection and are easy to apply. Just give it a try and share your experience!

Clear varnish for furniture surfaces, acrylic-based and dries to a matte finish.

That would definitely be my favorite, especially when the furniture surfaces have already seen some wear. By the way, it’s also available in different gloss levels if a slight sheen is ever desired 😉

I can definitely confirm this. I had doubts at first, but after using it, the scratches have become significantly less noticeable. Properly maintaining your furniture can keep it looking good for much longer. This makes everyday life in the living room much easier!
