Good morning everyone, I am currently planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island and want to incorporate as much storage space as possible, while also creating a seating area for at least two people. My goal is a functional island that serves as a storage marvel but can also be used as a cozy bar or breakfast spot.

I already have some basic ideas but am wondering how to best take advantage of Metod’s modularity to optimally combine drawers, shelves, and seating areas. I am especially interested in how to properly and structurally attach the seating area to the cabinet carcass and which cabinet types are most suitable for the main storage components.

Perhaps some of you have experience with building such Metod kitchen islands, maybe even in your own homes? Tips on planning, cabinet selection, countertops, and especially on construction details for the seating area would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

To make efficient use of storage space in a Metod kitchen island, I recommend the following structure:
- Mainly use pull-out and internal drawers, as they provide the best access to the available space.
- Corner cabinets offer large storage capacity but are difficult to access; here, a carousel or Le Mans system can be installed.
- For the seating area, a tabletop offset from the cabinet sides is suitable, fixed with sturdy fastenings and additional reinforcements at the base.
- The worktop should be at least 4 cm (1.5 inches) thick, ideally made of solid wood or thick laminate, to withstand the load from seating tables and stools.
- Cabinet types such as the 80x60 cm (32x24 inches) pull-out cabinet are good for large pans, while smaller 40x60 cm (16x24 inches) front cabinets are intended for spices.

Note that the seating surface should extend at least 30 cm (12 inches) beyond the base cabinets to ensure legroom.

I would simply use two 60cm (24 inches) wide base cabinets with pull-out drawers and install the seating surface between them. Important: keep the seating area clear of electrical wiring and water connections.

Interesting approach, but honestly: Is the standard depth of Metod cabinets at 60 cm (24 inches) really ideal if you want to create seating at the same time?

That is true, but it overlooks that many people sitting at kitchen islands prefer more legroom or even space to stretch their legs. Perhaps narrower cabinets on the seating side should be considered to create more space.

Also: Has the issue been taken into account whether the seating area and handle areas for storage might interfere with each other? Some handles can negatively affect the seating height.

Thanks for pointing that out! That’s something I’m not entirely sure about. What would be the ideal depth for a combination of storage and seating? Would, for example, 60 cm (24 inches) cabinet depth plus a 30 cm (12 inches) cantilevered seat be suitable, or would 50 cm (20 inches) plus 40 cm (16 inches) work better?

Has the issue of conflicts between seating areas and storage handle surfaces been considered?

That’s an important consideration! Are there recommended solutions, such as handleless fronts or recessed handles, to minimize conflicts?

Regarding storage and seating areas, I recommend, especially for IKEA Metod, a combination of the following elements:
- Cabinets with full-extension drawers for small items or pantry goods
- Drawer inserts for cutlery and cooking utensils

For the seating area:
- Countertops with an overhang of at least 30-40 cm (12-16 inches)
- Avoid handles on the seating area or use push-to-open systems to prevent interference

For stability, it is advisable to secure the countertop with brackets fixed to the base cabinets and, if necessary, use support legs.

The standard depth of Metod base cabinets is 60 cm (24 inches), and combining them with a seating countertop about 35 cm (14 inches) deep is a proven practical solution.
