Hello everyone,

I have been using a Billy shelf for some time now, but unfortunately, the doors don’t open and close as smoothly as I would like. They feel rather stiff, and sometimes there is a hard clicking sound when I close the doors.

I’m particularly interested in whether there are mechanical adjustments I can make myself to improve the ease of movement of the doors – for example, on the hinges or by adjusting the door alignment.

Do you have any tips on how to make the doors open and close more easily and smoothly? Maybe some way to adjust, lubricate, or other small tricks that could make everyday use much more comfortable?

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

First, it's best to check whether the screws on the hinges are tightened securely.

If the doors catch or stick, lightly lubricating the hinges often helps – preferably with a silicone spray or sewing machine oil.

Additionally, you should check if the doors are properly aligned; sometimes a small adjustment of the hinges can make a difference.

Exactly that! If the doors don’t fit perfectly, opening and closing them feels and sounds really unpleasant.

For me, it helped a lot just to slightly adjust the hinges. Don’t hesitate to give it a try! 🙂

And if you add a bit of lubricant afterward, using the doors suddenly becomes a real pleasure. Good luck!

To improve the functionality of BILLY doors, it is important to:

1. Check that the hinges are securely fastened at all attachment points.
2. If the closing noise sounds harsh, using furniture or silicone spray can enhance smoothness and noise reduction.
3. Precisely adjusting the door position at the hinge is crucial. The hinges supplied by IKEA are usually adjustable in multiple directions (height, depth, lateral).
4. If the door is very stiff to move, dust or dirt inside the hinges could be the cause – cleaning may help.

The user manual or the official IKEA help page also provides guidance on how to readjust the hinges.

Avoid using aggressive lubricants that could damage the materials.

The goal is a smoothly operating door system that closes gently.

Is this really the optimal solution? I wonder if oiling might cause dust to accumulate over time and actually impair the function.

Instead, the issue could be due to the door weight or the positioning of the doors not being ideal. Wouldn’t it be more sensible to first ensure precise alignment of the doors and then apply minimal or no lubrication at all?

Could more specific steps or tools needed be provided? I’ve read that usually a standard Phillips screwdriver is enough, but more detailed information would be helpful.

That’s a good point, thanks!

From my experience so far, the doors have been a bit stiff to open, but I haven’t oiled them consistently. I wanted to bring up this topic specifically because I want to avoid doing anything wrong, like over-lubricating.

Could you maybe explain which products are really recommended and which should be avoided?

And Danial, a brief guide with tips on adjusting the doors would be great. Possibly a short overview of what can be adjusted on these IKEA hinges specifically.
