Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the problem of trying to place a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA on a very uneven floor. The issue is that the floor is so uneven in some spots that the bookshelf wobbles and is not stable without additional support. I have already tried the included adjustable feet, but they are not sufficient to fully compensate for the unevenness of the floor.

My question to you: How do you secure or stabilize your BILLY bookshelves on uneven floors? Are there specific techniques or accessories to ensure the bookshelf can still be installed safely and securely? Should the back panel be fastened differently, or are extra spacers under the shelves helpful? I don’t have a wall to simply anchor the bookshelf to, which makes the situation more difficult.

I would really appreciate any helpful tips, experiences, or instructions so that my bookshelf can finally stand safely and not rock.

I would recommend placing plastic washers under the feet until the floor is leveled. Alternatively, small wooden dowels or wedges can be used. It is important to adjust the shelving unit so that it no longer wobbles. Self-adhesive felt pads might also help provide better stability.

Hello Pohenning,

I am very familiar with this problem and can offer you a fairly comprehensive solution. First, you should measure the floor unevenness precisely to estimate how much height adjustment is needed. If there are larger differences, I would recommend the following approach:

1. Height adjustment with adjustable feet: You can buy special furniture feet that can be adjusted with millimeter precision by turning them. These replace the original feet and are often made of metal.

2. Floor pads or spacer plates: These can be placed under the feet. It is important that they are non-slip and somewhat elastic so that the shelving unit does not rest on hard edges, which could compromise stability.

3. Fixing to the wall: Even if you say wall mounting is not possible, it is worth checking again. Smaller wall brackets or clamps can also be attached to adjacent furniture.

There are several products available in hardware stores, such as special angle brackets or shelving rails that can be mounted flexibly.

4. Finally, you can reinforce the back panel of the BILLY shelving unit with additional screws to increase stability. Sometimes, placing small felt or rubber strips between the back panel and the wall helps prevent slipping.

If you like, you can also provide me with the measurements of the floor unevenness, and I can give you an even more specific recommendation.

Good luck with the assembly!

It’s great that you’re thinking this through so carefully! 🙂 I’ve experienced something similar – for me, small wooden wedges worked really well when placed under individual shelf feet.

Exactly, something like that! The important thing is to be patient and keep adjusting until nothing wobbles anymore. It’s really satisfying to see the shelf standing stable. It’s also worth using a small level to check the positioning.

And once the shelf is finally standing, the satisfaction is doubled! Don’t stress yourself out – you’ve got this! 😉
