Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea Kallax shelf unit at home standing on a laminate floor. Unfortunately, the shelf shifts even with slight contact or when pulling something out of one of the boxes. This is quite annoying because it causes the unit to become unlevel, and I’m worried it might get damaged or even tip over eventually.

I am therefore considering using anti-slip mats beneath the Kallax unit. My question to the community is:

Is it advisable to place special anti-slip mats under the Kallax shelf on a laminate floor to prevent sliding? Have you had any experience with this, and are there specific materials or products that work particularly well?

Any tips on possible alternatives or additional measures to ensure stable footing are also welcome. Thanks in advance!

Non-slip mats are generally effective in preventing slipping on smooth floors. Rubber mats or felt pads can also work, but they are less effective. Simply cut to size and place underneath.

To stabilize shelves on laminate flooring, using non-slip mats is highly recommended. Models with a rubberized surface provide good grip and effectively reduce the risk of shifting.

Alternatively, double-sided carpet tape can be used, but this option is less flexible when relocating the shelf.

It is important to have sufficient surface coverage under the shelf. Smaller mats placed only at the corners may shift under load.

Agree. Easy to handle and very effective.

I would like to add that anti-slip mats not only prevent slipping but can also protect laminate flooring. Especially with heavy furniture pieces like the Kallax, the pressure distribution is often not optimal, which can leave small scratches or pressure marks.

When purchasing mats, look for ones that do not stick to the floor or leave residue over time. Some inexpensive products can damage or discolor the laminate.

If possible without any issues, small felt pads can also be attached to the bottom to protect the furniture when moving it during rearrangement.

Yes, that is an effective way to address the issue. It is important that the mats are suitable for laminate flooring, meaning they should not leave adhesive residues or damage the floor. In particular, commercially available rubber anti-slip mats, whether self-adhesive or loose-laid, provide enough friction without harming the floor.

I can only agree with that. In the long run, preserving the laminate flooring is usually more important than the quick fix with tape.
