ᐅ Are there Ikea Platsa furniture units with built-in power outlets?

MiguguHello everyone,
I am currently considering furnishing my new home with the Ikea Platsa furniture system. I have an important question that I haven’t been able to find a satisfactory answer to anywhere else: Does Ikea offer Platsa furniture with built-in power outlets?
More specifically, I am interested in whether Ikea sells such power outlets not only as accessories but if there are specific Platsa elements that come with power outlets pre-installed from the factory. That would, of course, be very convenient, especially for the flexible use of lamps, chargers, or other electrical devices directly integrated into the furniture.
Perhaps someone has experience with this or recommendations on how to practically integrate power connections into the Platsa system? I look forward to your feedback!

Hi Migugu!
That’s a great question! 😊😄 I have a few Platsa cabinets at home myself and, to my knowledge, Ikea does not offer Platsa furniture with built-in power outlets directly from the factory.
However, there are several ways to integrate power outlets or power strips into or onto the furniture. For example, many people use under-cabinet power outlets that can be mounted at the back of the cabinet. This looks neat and is very practical!
I would recommend checking this out at the Ikea showroom or speaking with the staff there. Good luck!

Just to clarify: The question was whether Ikea explicitly sells Platsa furniture with built-in sockets, not just simple accessory solutions.
That matches my understanding. Ikea tends to be rather conservative in this regard – they sell the furniture itself, and any electrical installations must be done by the customer or added separately.
Another issue: sockets require specific safety standards depending on the device and placement. Integrating them into furniture can cause challenges with approvals and durability.
So if someone claims that Platsa has built-in sockets, I would question that.

Hello Migugu,
I like to go into some detail because the topic involves several interesting technical aspects.
As far as I know, Ikea does not currently offer Platsa units with “built-in power outlets” in the sense of pre-installed, permanently integrated electrical connections. This is partly due to their product philosophy, which focuses on modularity and easy assembly, and partly due to safety considerations (as BLAKEO has already mentioned).
Instead, it is often recommended to install power strips or multi-socket outlets behind or underneath the furniture.
Common options include:
- Mounting flat power strips under shelves
- Using cable grommets in the Platsa units to organize cables more neatly
- Modifying or retrofitting by an electrical contractor to create permanently installed solutions, although this is not directly Ikea-compliant
If you are looking for a professional solution that ensures safety and code compliance, in my opinion, consulting an electrician would be advisable.
I’m curious: What exactly do you need the power outlets in the Platsa for? Lighting, charging stations, other devices? That way, it would be easier to consider specific options.

Thanks for the information!
@leebi7: I mainly want the sockets for ambient lighting in the shelves, and possibly also for phone chargers directly inside the cabinet. Convenience would be great since the furniture is against the wall and I don’t want to run cables afterward.
The safety and approval aspect makes sense. I had thought maybe Ikea offers a special product to make such applications easier.
It would be interesting to know if other users have found an elegant solution for this in the Platsa system.

I can completely understand your concern, Migugu.
It’s always a bit frustrating to deal with tangled cables or not having a power outlet nearby.
I have Platsa cabinets myself and placed small power strips with toggle switches inside them. They aren’t built in, but positioned so that I can easily reach them while keeping everything looking tidy.
It’s also important to me that no electrical work is done in a makeshift way, since I’m not technically skilled. Safety is my top priority.
Maybe you’ll find more tips here on how to keep things both neat and practical.
