Hello everyone,

I would like to start a discussion about alternative handles that work well with Ikea PAX doors. Specifically, I’m looking for suggestions on which types or styles of handles you would recommend if you want to replace the original PAX handles—whether for design, comfort, or installation reasons.

It’s important to me that the handles not only look good together but are also compatible in terms of mounting or can be installed with reasonable effort. Maybe there are certain handle dimensions or fastening methods that have proven especially reliable for PAX doors.

I’m looking forward to your experiences and recommendations! Which alternative handles do you use on your PAX wardrobes, and what should be considered when choosing them?

Hello Leonlo,

First of all: Your question is very well structured, which makes it much easier to provide a targeted answer.

For IKEA PAX doors, you especially need to pay attention to the hole spacing for the handles, as most doors use a standard measurement of 128 mm (5 inches). Many alternative handles either offer a direct replacement with the same drill holes or so-called "retrofit handles" that are mounted on the outside and do not require any drilling.

Alternatively, handle bars are very popular and are installed on the door surface. It is important that they are not too deep, especially for doors that are not very thick, so you don’t accidentally bump into them.

Another tip: Watch the material thickness and the screw load capacity, as PAX doors are usually made of relatively thin material.

I hope this helps you a bit. If you want to know more about specific types of handles, just ask!

Hey Leonlo and all other PAX fans!

I recently fitted my PAX doors with solid oak handles – they look really elegant and feel pleasantly warm. 😄

An important tip when choosing alternative handles: the style should match your room. I prefer a calm and natural look, so I liked wooden handles. Others swear by modern metal handles in matte black or brass.

Another great option is handle strips that act like a tunnel. They’re practical because you hardly need to make any adjustments, and the look stays quite clean.

A small tip: if you buy handles with screws that are too short or too long, it can cause a lot of frustration – it’s better to measure your door before buying!

Hello everyone,

in addition to the previous tips, I would like to emphasize that some users have successfully switched to so-called recessed handles (also known as "flush handles"). These are integrated into the door and provide a very minimalist look.

With PAX doors, it is important to carefully check the thickness of the doors before installation. Manufacturing usually requires precise routing, which can also affect the stability of PAX doors made from particleboard.

Therefore, my advice is: if you do not have your own router or are not very skilled in DIY, it is better to opt for surface-mounted handles or those that do not require additional processing.

I have installed such handles myself, and the visual benefit is significant if you do not mind the effort.

That definitely sounds very helpful, thank you! What about handles that are a bit more unusual, such as leather or rope handles? Has anyone tried such more extravagant solutions with PAX already? Are there any specific challenges when it comes to fastening them or issues with the feel?

Also interesting: Do the screws on the IKEA doors remain durable if you frequently pull on small handles?

Good morning everyone,

here is a brief workshop on alternative handles for PAX doors:

- First: Always measure the drilling holes precisely! The standard spacing is usually 128 mm (5 inches), but some doors also have 96 mm (3.8 inches) or 160 mm (6.3 inches) hole distances. Don’t forget to double-check.

- Leather and rope handles:
- These are often attached with screws or nails, but since IKEA PAX doors are relatively thin (about 16 mm (0.6 inches)), stability can be a critical issue.
- For leather handles, it is advisable to attach a backing plate (a small wooden or metal plate) on the inside by gluing or screwing it on to distribute the stress.

- Materials:
- Metal handle strips (aluminum, stainless steel) are durable, usually easy to install, and offer clean lines.
- Wooden handles create a cozier feel but are often more expensive and require maintenance.

- Screws:
- Make sure to choose the correct screw length to avoid piercing through the door.
- With frequent use, the threads may loosen, so check screws regularly.

I hope this helps – feel free to ask if you have any questions!
