ᐅ My KALLAX unit is unstable because the hardwood floor is uneven – any recommendations?

sadichenHello everyone,
I have a basic issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelf: the shelf is very unstable, and I strongly suspect that the reason is my hardwood floor is not completely level – it has slight unevenness and seems to be laid crookedly.
I have already tried adjusting the shelf legs a little, but since the KALLAX does not have adjustable feet, this doesn’t help. The shelf wobbles quite a bit, especially when loaded with books and decorations.
My question is: what are your recommendations for improving the stability of my KALLAX when the floor surface isn’t perfectly even? Are there special pads, adjustments, or other tricks you would use to securely fix the shelf without damaging the hardwood floor?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello sadichen,
I can give you a brief guide on how to deal with uneven parquet flooring to make your KALLAX as stable as possible:
1. First, use a spirit level to carefully check the floor under the shelf and identify the spots with the greatest slope.
2. Get thin furniture wedges or adjustable furniture feet – if the shelf doesn’t have adjustable legs, wedges are the best solution.
3. Place the furniture wedges precisely under the individual legs of the shelf to compensate for the height differences.
4. To protect the parquet floor, I recommend attaching or placing felt pads between the shelf leg and the wedge.
5. Finally, you can add further stability by securing the shelf to the wall with a suitable bracket.
Common mistake: placing wedges directly on the parquet without protection, which can cause scratches.
If you reconsider the shelf, there are even KALLAX-like units with adjustable feet that could make this easier.
I hope this helps you!

Regarding stability: The KALLAX is fundamentally a simple modular shelf unit, not specifically designed for uneven floors. Therefore, if the load is safety-critical, additional wall mounting should be carried out. The mounting brackets included in the IKEA instructions prevent tipping and significantly increase stability.
You should also consider the indoor climate, as very dry air can cause parquet flooring to expand or contract slightly, which may affect the positioning.
More specifically, I would recommend:
- Use furniture wedges with felt protection
- Install wall brackets
- Avoid loading only on one side
Also, avoid placing overly thick pads underneath, as this can cause the shelf to tip over.
I wonder if it really makes sense to level the shelf solely by placing shims under it on an uneven parquet floor.
Besides just using shims, it’s important to check whether the parquet might need repair or adjustment, as significant unevenness could permanently affect stability.
Also, consider whether the load can be stable with the current KALLAX dimensions at all. An additional frame or stiffening elements inside the shelf could greatly improve stability, even if the floor is uneven.
In my experience, furniture wedges or felt pads alone are sometimes not enough.

I completely understand your issue, and the solution always depends on the specific conditions on site.
My advice:
1. Check the greatest height difference using a long spirit level or a taut string to get a better idea of the unevenness.
2. There are special adjustable leveling feet that can be screwed onto the shelving unit by attaching small wooden adapters to the shelf.
3. Safety first: You should definitely secure the shelving unit to the wall. Securing it is the most important step when there is unevenness.
4. If you feel a bit more skilled with DIY, you can also make small wedges from plastic or wood, cushion them well, and glue them firmly in place.
If you have any more questions, I’m happy to help.
