Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA Malm furniture, specifically the nightstand and the large wardrobe – both have a slight wobble, even though they were assembled correctly. I am interested in knowing: How can I effectively prevent wobbling in MALM furniture? What factors typically cause this, and which methods or materials are proven to increase stability? I would appreciate detailed advice, especially tips on targeted reinforcements or alternative screw techniques.

Simple solution for wobbly Malm dressers: place rubber pads or silicone feet pads under the legs. They prevent slipping and compensate for minor unevenness.

Here is a brief tutorial on stabilizing MALM furniture:

1. Check the back panel:
The back panel provides lateral stability. Often, nails are either insufficiently driven in or missing.
→ Nail the back panel fully and neatly, using a hammer with a felt head to avoid damage.

2. Screws & connections:
After assembly, carefully tighten all screws, as wood panels may settle slightly under weight.

3. Uneven floors:
Measure the height of each furniture foot with a long spirit level.
→ Use plastic or felt washers to protect the floor surface and reliably compensate for minor height differences.

4. Additional reinforcements:
If wobbling persists, small corner braces can be installed inside, where they remain hidden.

Summary: A combination of secure back panel fastening, proper screw handling, and compensating for uneven floors is essential.

Nail the back panel completely and cleanly

Interesting, nailing instead of just screwing? Could that really make a big difference? I assume it significantly increases the lateral strength?

Also: How well does the back panel typically hold up despite nailing? Are there any experiences on whether the material becomes brittle over time?

In addition to the tips about nails and screws: As soon as the back panel does not fit perfectly, moisture can cause the material to swell and worsen the fit.

My recommendation: Install the back panel with slight pressing pressure, then fix it immediately.

A practical tip: It is worthwhile to install plastic gliders on the furniture legs, as they not only provide height adjustment but also act as vibration dampers.

Yes, it significantly improves lateral stiffness. The thin nails used for the back panel provide the balancing moment against shear forces.

Due to the material (particle board), regular inspection is recommended, but with proper nailing and normal use, premature material fatigue is not expected.

Thank you for the very detailed explanations and the practical step-by-step guide. I have one final question to clarify my understanding:

Would it be advisable to add a thin wooden strip as internal reinforcement around the upper crossbeam area of the wardrobe, or would that interfere too much with the flexibility of the structure?

My goal is to prevent any long-term wobbling without modifying the original parts.
