ᐅ What stabilization methods do you know for Billy bookcases?

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several IKEA Billy bookcases and want to install them as safely and securely as possible in my apartment. Since the bookcases are quite tall and can sometimes feel a bit wobbly, I’m especially interested in which stabilization methods you use for Billy units to make them permanently tip-resistant and load-bearing.

I’m interested in both the official IKEA recommendations and alternative or self-developed methods that have proven effective in everyday use. Are there any specific wall anchors, connection techniques, or creative solutions to link single units or multiple bookcases into one stable system?

Tips on the best fastening methods for different wall materials (e.g., concrete, drywall) would also be very helpful. I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Thanks for the tip, Dopoki. My walls are indeed drywall, so I’m particularly interested in the choice of anchors. Do any of you have recommendations for specific brands or models that are especially suitable for mounting Billy shelves?

Also, how much weight can a single shelf roughly support if it is attached to the drywall only with the provided brackets?

For drywall, I recommend metal hollow wall anchors, as they hold significantly better than plastic ones. Brands include Fischer or Spit.

However, I would always place the shelves on the floor at the bottom and secure them at the top with at least two brackets.

This question is difficult to answer definitively because the load capacity depends on the quality of the wall anchors, the number of fastening points, and the wall construction.

As a general rule, you should not load more than 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs) per shelf if you use only two brackets on drywall. It is better to have four fastening points with metal wall anchors.

Additionally, I strongly recommend always securing the shelf to the floor as well, so the wall attachment acts mainly as a safety measure.

I usually connect the Billy shelves to each other using small metal brackets and secure the entire grouping to the wall. This provides good stability, and multiple shelves joined together are hardly likely to tip over.

As a simple extension, I placed rubber pads under the shelf feet. This prevents slipping and provides a more stable base, especially on smooth floors.

That sounds right, it holds the same for me. If more weight is expected, I would definitely add more fasteners.
