ᐅ Are Ikea BRIMNES furniture pieces suitable for use in damp rooms?

PeligiHello everyone,
I am planning to use some furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series in my bathroom and wanted to specifically ask: Are Ikea BRIMNES furniture pieces actually suitable for humid rooms, such as spaces with higher moisture levels like bathrooms?
I understand that many furniture items made from engineered wood are not ideal for these environments. BRIMNES seems to consist of MDF or particleboard with painted or foil surfaces. My concern is whether these pieces provide sufficient moisture protection and how they perform in the long term when exposed to splashes of water or consistently high humidity.
Are there any experiences regarding the use of BRIMNES furniture in bathrooms without special treatment, or should damage and swelling of the panels be expected? Perhaps someone has recommendations on how to better protect the furniture if it is used in humid rooms? Or alternative suggestions if BRIMNES is not suitable?
Thanks in advance for your insights!

Are Ikea BRIMNES furniture pieces really suitable for damp rooms, such as rooms with higher humidity like bathrooms? The BRIMNES series from Ikea is primarily designed for use in living areas and is not specifically intended for damp rooms. The furniture is made of particleboard with melamine coating and laminate surfaces, which offer limited protection against moisture.
- Continuous exposure to high humidity in bathrooms can cause swelling and damage to the surface.
- Short-term exposure to splashes of water is usually not a problem if the surfaces are dried quickly.
- There is no explicit certification for damp room suitability, such as waterproof coatings or solid core panels.
If you want to use BRIMNES furniture in your bathroom, I recommend:
- Avoid placing the furniture directly next to the shower area.
- Ensure adequate ventilation.
- Regularly keep the furniture dry.
Furniture with waterproof surfaces or made from materials like solid wood with appropriate treatment, aluminum, or plastic are better suited for damp rooms.
In summary: BRIMNES is not ideal for bathrooms but can be used cautiously under suitable conditions.

Personally, I once used a BRIMNES dresser in a bathroom, but it was a well-ventilated room with a window. After about six months, slight swelling appeared at the edges.
My recommendations:
- If you still use it, make sure to keep it away from direct water sources.
- Use rubber feet or spacers underneath to prevent standing moisture from affecting the underside.
- If necessary, apply a clear varnish to protect the surface from moisture.
The furniture is affordable and visually appealing, but you should expect some compromises in durability when used in a bathroom.
Hi everyone!
I can only say: I have had BRIMNES furniture in my bathroom for over a year now and I am absolutely satisfied! Of course, they are not originally designed for wet rooms, but with a bit of care, they work great:
- I mounted the shelves on walls without direct splash water exposure.
- Always ensured good ventilation (airing and exhaust).
- No moisture was left standing on the surfaces for a long time.
I can confirm that. I sealed the edges with a clear protective varnish, which helped!
So, with some maintenance and smart placement: yes, BRIMNES can be used in the bathroom! For me, it’s a great, affordable solution that looks good too. Not perfect, but definitely usable. 🙂
