I am currently considering ways to enhance some of my Ikea Hemnes furniture both visually and functionally to make it look more unique and higher quality. I already have the basic versions and believe there is a lot of potential to bring out through targeted DIY efforts. I am especially interested in tips and tricks for refinishing surfaces (e.g., painting, staining, or applying veneer), as well as practical ideas for improving fittings, handles, or interior organization. Of course, I’m also looking for advice on durable solutions that won’t show wear quickly.
So: What DIY tips do you have for upgrading Ikea Hemnes furniture? Which materials and tools have you used? What would you particularly recommend or rather avoid? Looking forward to your experiences and tricks!

To truly enhance the Ikea Hemnes furniture, I recommend a systematic approach that ensures the DIY modifications are durable over time:
- Preparation: Start by lightly sanding the surfaces with fine sandpaper (grit 180 to 220) to remove the clear coat and improve adhesion for the new paint.
- Paint choice: For an elegant, long-lasting finish, use a polyurethane (PU) varnish or, if you prefer a more rustic look, an oil-wax system. Both provide effective protection against scratches and moisture.
- Application: Apply several thin coats, sanding lightly between each layer.
- Handles and fittings: Brass metal handles or black iron handles can completely change the style. Be sure to check for compatible drill holes or close the existing holes and drill new ones.
- Interior details: Line drawers with felt or add special organizers for better order.
- Extra tip: For storage furniture like dressers, LED light strips under the shelves add a modern touch.
Could you specify which furniture pieces you want to redesign? That way, more targeted recommendations can be given, for example for wardrobes or bedside tables.

Interesting question! However, I wonder if constantly "upgrading" inexpensive furniture is really the most sustainable approach. You might almost think that Ikea already designs their products with a certain plan for short-term use.
Aren't we sometimes better off investing in something of higher quality? Still, if you enjoy DIY projects, I think it’s great to personalize furniture. For example, using unusual color combinations or engraving patterns with a sanding machine – that creates a truly unique piece you won’t find anywhere else.
But be careful: working on it too much risks compromising its functionality or stability. What do you think?
