ᐅ How do I care for Ikea Hemnes furniture when living with pets that are often in contact with it?

Irfan45Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I purchased several pieces of furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series because I liked the design and quality of workmanship. However, I have multiple pets (two cats and a dog) that are very active and often scratch or touch the furniture surfaces with their claws while playing around.
My question is: How can I best care for Ikea Hemnes furniture when there is heavy contact with pets, in order to prevent or at least minimize scratches, stains, and other damage? Are there special cleaners, care methods, or protective products that work well?
It is important for me to take a nurturing and preventive approach, as wood surfaces can be sensitive and I want to enjoy my furniture for as long as possible.
I would be very grateful for helpful tips, including personal experiences!

Hello Irfan45,
Your issue is quite complex because the Hemnes series is made from solid pine wood, which has a relatively soft surface that is more prone to scratches and dents than hardwoods.
To protect your furniture optimally, I recommend the following approach:
- Cleaning: Use mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents without aggressive solvents or alcohol. Usually, a damp microfiber cloth and some soapy water are sufficient.
- Protective Coating: After cleaning, apply a special wood care oil suitable for pine wood. These oils penetrate the pores and increase resistance.
- Prevention: You can best reduce the risk of scratches by taking these measures:
- Nail trimming or nail grinders for cats
- Protecting critical areas, such as furniture edges, with felt pads or edge guards
- Alternatively, you can cover furniture surfaces with transparent, removable protective films, but these need to be checked regularly
- Stains: Immediate removal of moisture is essential. Wood absorbs liquids, which can cause stains.
One more question: How intense is the contact really? Do the animals scratch a lot, or are they more passive? This helps fine-tune the protective measures.
I hope this helps you already.

Hello Irfan45,
To clarify, I would like to add that Ikea Hemnes furniture has a painted surface that provides some level of protection but is not completely resistant to damage.
The following care routine has proven effective over time:
- Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth.
- For cleaning, I use lukewarm water with a mild dish soap. It is very important to never leave the furniture wet and to dry it immediately.
- To protect the surface, I use a furniture care spray specifically designed for painted wooden furniture. These products help preserve the paint layer and minimize minor scratches.
And especially important if you have pets that like to scratch:
- Make sure the furniture is not placed directly in areas where pets frequently scratch.
- Scratching posts or other diversion toys are very helpful.
In summary:
- Gentle cleaning
- Use of appropriate care products
- Prevention of scratches through furniture arrangement and pet toys
If you want, I can share the names of the care products or their ingredients that I use.

Do not place furniture directly in areas frequently scratched by pets.Don’t you think that this is more of a symptom of the underlying problem? Simply moving furniture out of the danger zone shows that the material isn’t really suitable for everyday use with pets.
IKEA Hemnes is nicely designed, but the wood is soft and vulnerable – not a big surprise. You might expect that a bit of “gentle care” and “care spray” would fix everything, but that’s probably a naive expectation.
If I have a house with pets, I either buy sturdy hardwood furniture or furniture with durable surfaces, such as lacquered MDF with scratch-resistant coatings. Basic “maintenance” is often just a temporary patch.
In other words: If you have pets, you should adjust your material choices rather than just trying to cover up the damage with maintenance.

Those who have pets should adjust the choice of materials, not just rely on maintenance to mask the damage.Hello everyone,
I understand rebufar’s criticism but would like to add that even with softer materials, such as Hemnes furniture, it is possible to maintain an attractive appearance over time if care and prevention are combined.
In addition to the methods mentioned, I recommend the following:
- Once per quarter, perform a wood cleaning using a special cleaner designed for lacquered surfaces to deeply remove dirt.
- Regularly check the length of your pets’ claws and, if needed, provide cats and dogs with scratching posts or training toys to redirect their natural scratching behavior.
- If scratches do occur, minor touch-ups can be concealed using a matching lacquer pen or color-matched furniture wax.
Depending on usage and your pet’s behavior, it can also be helpful to protect exposed areas of furniture with decorative objects or, for example, tablecloths without compromising functionality.
If anyone wants to know more, I’m happy to share tips on suitable products and application techniques.
