Hello everyone,

I need your help regarding the secure attachment of kitchen handles on my Ikea Metod cabinet. I recently ordered some new handles but am unsure of the best way to fix them firmly and durably to the doors. The drill holes match the instructions, but I want to avoid the screws loosening quickly or the handles twisting.

Has anyone had experience with Metod handles and can offer advice on how to proceed? Which screws or fasteners work best? Should I pay attention to specific torque settings, or are there any tips to ensure everything stays really tight?

Thanks in advance for your support!

Hello PINKU,

Your question is very well phrased, and from your description, you are already on the right track. For securely attaching the Ikea Metod kitchen handles, I recommend the following approach:

- Use the supplied screws, as they are usually the correct length for the thickness of the cabinet door.
- Important: Do not overtighten the screws, as this can cause the door material to swell or crack. It’s best to use a torque wrench if available; otherwise, tighten them firmly by hand with care.
- Optionally, you can use washers if the screw heads are too thin or to better distribute the load.
- After a few weeks, check the screws and retighten them if necessary, as wood and other materials can change slightly due to temperature and humidity.

If the handles are twisting, it is usually because the screws are too short or the threads are of poor quality. A small drop of medium-strength threadlocker (for example, from Loctite) can help here—apply sparingly, not in large amounts!

If you have any further questions, just let me know.

I completely agree with that, but I’d like to go into more technical detail since I approach this topic from a craftsmanship perspective.

The Ikea Metod fronts are usually made of particleboard with a melamine or foil coating, which can be sensitive to excessive pressure. Therefore, the correct screw length and applied torque are crucial to avoid damaging the material.

My advice:
- Use screws with a full thread that are at least 4–5 mm (0.16–0.20 inches) longer than the thickness of the front panel,
- so the fastening is anchored firmly in the cabinet carcass and not just in the front panel.
- If mounting errors occur due to misalignment of the holes, I recommend slightly enlarging the drill holes with a drill bit – this ensures clean screwing without splitting the material.

The preload tension is also important: screws should be tightened just enough so the handle doesn’t wobble, but without compressing the material. To prevent the handle from rotating, it’s also possible to place felt or rubber-like washers between the handle and the front panel, which act as small friction buffers.

My question for you is: Are the drill holes already pre-made, or do you have to drill the holes yourself? That significantly affects stability.

One more tip: If you use felt as a spacer, avoid self-adhesive felt strips because the adhesive can degrade due to moisture—real felt pads are better.

I hope this helps!

Really, good tip about the felt!

Also: don’t overtighten screws; the rest will settle by itself. If the screws are too loose, just use larger screws, which usually works well. Threadlocker is fine but only a little. This usually ensures a long-lasting hold.
