Hello everyone, I recently bought the Pax wardrobe from IKEA and overall I am satisfied. However, I am concerned about the metal parts, especially the rails and screws, which might rust over time. My question is: How can I keep the metal parts of the Pax rust-free, especially under normal indoor conditions where humidity levels can fluctuate? Are there any specific maintenance methods, oils, or protective products you would recommend? I would appreciate practical tips for preventing rust, ideally based on your own experience with the Pax system or similar furniture. Thanks in advance!

Hello Domutar, that’s a very good and important question! Although metal parts on furniture like the Pax are often galvanized or coated, rust can still develop, especially when moisture is involved. To keep the metal parts rust-free, I would recommend the following:

- Regular cleaning: Dust and moisture can accumulate, so gently wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Dry environment: Avoid letting moisture stay on the metal parts for a long time, so ensure good ventilation whenever possible.
- Protection with oil or wax: Light lubricants like WD-40 or special furniture wax create a protective film against rust.
- Rust protection sprays: There are specific sprays to prevent rust that can be applied thinly. Just make sure they are compatible with the furniture materials.

If you already find rust spots, fine sandpaper followed by applying rust protection will help. I hope this gives you a good starting point! If you like, we can also talk about specific products.

This is an essential point. It is important to apply oil or sprays sparingly and evenly to avoid leaving unpleasant residues on other surfaces. For Pax metal parts, make sure not to damage any rubber components or paint finishes.

Additionally, you can reduce indoor humidity with a small dehumidifier, especially during autumn and winter, to effectively prevent rust formation. Metal rust tends to occur when moisture and temperature fluctuations are present, so controlling the indoor climate is often underestimated.

Hello Domutar, I’m happy to share a brief guide on how to keep your Pax metal parts rust-free:

1. Cleaning: Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with clear water or a 50:50 mixture of alcohol and water to remove dirt and fingerprints. Avoid aggressive cleaners, as they can damage the protective coating.

2. Drying: Thoroughly dry the metal parts afterwards, since moisture promotes rust formation.

3. Apply protection: Use a thin layer of wax (furniture or automotive wax) or a rust-preventive oil, such as a light silicone oil that does not attract dust.

4. Long-term protection: Repeat this treatment every few months. Make sure to address any rust spots immediately before they spread.

A common mistake is not renewing the protective layer regularly. Also, the syringe or rail slides should be lightly oiled, as mechanical friction encourages corrosion.

Hope this helps you.

Short and effective: Regularly check metal parts for the first signs of rust, remove it immediately with fine sandpaper, and then apply rust protection oil or a suitable maintenance product. Ventilation helps in the long term.

I think you can also prevent rust with a bit of fun 😉. Just put some WD-40 on a cloth and gently rub the metal parts – it protects them really well and stops rust from forming quickly! Besides that, I ventilate my apartment as much as possible – rust hates that! One more tip: if you notice the tracks squeaking, sprinkle a little graphite powder on them; it works great and keeps your fingers clean!

So, with a bit of care, the Pax will stay rust-free without any problem, no worries! And then the wardrobe will be much more enjoyable to use.
