Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Billy shelving unit with a drawer, but the drawer keeps sticking when pulled out and doesn’t operate smoothly. The drawer is correctly installed, and the slides also seem to be properly mounted, yet it catches at several points during extension. Does anyone have experience with this or any tips on how to fix the problem? Are there typically specific clearances to consider, or is there a trick to make the drawer run more smoothly? Thanks in advance!

If the drawer sticks, it is usually due to incorrect adjustment of the side slides or material tension. First, check whether the slides are mounted exactly at the same height and run parallel. The drawer should also fit into the slides without any play and not be too tight.

Also check if any screws are overtightened or if the shelf sides are slightly warped—this can also cause blockages. For Billy shelves, even a difference of one millimeter (0.04 inches) can be critical. Finally, lightly sanding the edges of the drawer box can help if certain spots catch.

Also check if the running rails are clean and free of dirt or debris. Sometimes, simply treating the rails with some silicone spray is enough, as excessive friction is often the issue.

If the drawer sticks at one point, a warped front panel could be the cause. This can be corrected by applying gentle pressure or by slightly loosening the screws and then tightening them again until everything fits properly.

Thanks, I will check all the screws again. I noticed that the back panel was a bit stretched during assembly. Could that be related?

Is there a preferred spot where I should apply the silicone spray? Only on the rails, or also on the drawer itself?

Yes, tension in the back panel can warp the cabinet structure and thus affect the drawer slides. The drawer sticks because the frame is not perfectly square.

Regarding silicone spray: apply it sparingly to the drawer runners, especially on the metal or plastic strips where the drawer contacts the slides. Use only a small amount, otherwise it will attract dust.
