Hello everyone, I am about to start my first major furniture project and want to assemble some Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with soft-close hinges. Since I’m a complete beginner, I have a few specific questions that maybe someone has already answered or that you know from experience:

- What are the most important steps to assemble the cabinets correctly and securely?
- How do I install the soft-close hinges properly so the doors close smoothly?
- Are there common beginner mistakes I should avoid?
- Do I need special tools, or are regular screwdrivers and a cordless drill enough?

I’ve looked through the Ikea instructions a bit, but sometimes I miss the practical tips that an experienced DIYer could provide. The cabinets should stand firm and neat, ideally with doors that fit perfectly and require minimal adjustment. I’m grateful for any advice!

Hey, I just have to jump in for a moment – I didn’t quite get the hang of the soft-close hinges on my first Metod project either. 😅

A quick tip from me to avoid frustration:
At first, you can just clip the hinges in and loosely screw them in. Then open and close the doors a few times – this way you can feel if anything is sticking or not working properly. Only tighten the screws once everything fits perfectly!

And one more thing: it’s best to prepare a proper surface for the cabinet body so nothing gets scratched. A few scratches at the start can really spoil the fun. 😉

Good luck, you’ll do great!

How does the sequence work? Do I have to build the entire carcass first and then install the doors, or do you attach a few hinges during the process to check and adjust them right away?

Additionally:

A stable base is key.
First, complete and secure the carcass. Especially on tiled floors, carefully adjust the leveling feet to prevent wobbling.
Then attach the hinges to the carcass, but don’t fully tighten them—leave them hand-tight.
Click the doors in, test their fit, and only then fully tighten the hinges.

It is also important to pay attention to the individual alignment of each door, since even with identical measurements the floor can be uneven. Check the vertical gaps and ensure the fronts are parallel.

Do you use a spirit level or have ways to compensate for small floor irregularities? Precision here makes all the difference.

Thanks, that sounds like a good practical approach! I will follow the advice to proceed step by step.

I have a small spirit level and plan to use it carefully during assembly. I will make use of the adjustable feet in case there are minor inaccuracies. I’m also trying to distribute the weight evenly to keep it stable.

I am still wondering if there is a way to test the soft-close function before everything is fully installed, or does it have to be checked by opening and closing the door? Is there a way to verify the function without any risk?

The soft-close function can only be properly tested with the door installed, as the mechanism is activated by the movement of the door.

Make sure the hinges are neither too loose nor too tight; otherwise, the damping system will not work correctly.

However, without the door, you can check if the damper moves smoothly by gently moving the hinge; it should operate smoothly without resistance.

But the real test is opening and closing the door to feel the delay and damping effect.

A thought beyond just the assembly instructions: Isn’t it a bit excessive to be so afraid of making mistakes when building an Ikea Metod cabinet? Of course, careful work is important, but especially soft-close hinges are so durable that even small inaccuracies are usually forgiven.

I believe it’s best to approach the whole process with some calmness. Perfectionism can quickly lead to frustration, especially for beginners. It’s better to make mistakes, notice them, correct them, and ultimately be pleased with a solid result.

Naturally, when installing the hinges and aligning the doors, proceed step by step, but don’t let every tiny gap drive you crazy.
