Nu_li35Hello everyone, I am looking for good and, above all, environmentally friendly methods to clean IKEA Hemnes furniture.
Since the HEMNES series is mostly made of solid pine wood or wood with a corresponding lacquer finish, I want to avoid using aggressive chemicals or environmentally harmful cleaning products. I am particularly interested in natural cleaning agents or home remedies suitable for maintenance, how to proceed without damaging the wood or harming the finish, and whether regular care is recommended to preserve the furniture sustainably.
Additionally, it would be helpful if anyone could share their experience with removing common stains such as grease marks, fingerprints, or dust from HEMNES furniture. Thanks in advance!

Hello Nu_li35,
For eco-friendly cleaning of IKEA HEMNES furniture, I generally recommend using mild and biodegradable cleaners. The furniture is usually made of painted solid pine wood, so it is important to avoid harsh or abrasive products that can damage the paint or wood.
The following approach is proven:
- Regularly remove dust with a soft, dry cloth.
- For daily cleaning, use a solution of warm water and a few drops of ecological soap (e.g., Castile soap).
- A soft cotton cloth should be slightly damp, not wet, to avoid leaving moisture on the wood.
- Stains such as grease can be spot-cleaned with diluted vinegar water (3 parts water, 1 part vinegar), but it is advisable to follow up with a dry cloth to remove any residue.
Avoid:
- Cleaners containing alcohol, as they can dissolve the paint.
- Abrasive cleaners or rough sponges.
Regular wiping and preventing moisture buildup will significantly extend the life of the wood.

I often feel that cleaning can be stressful, especially when you’re afraid of damaging the beautiful wood.
I’ve tried cleaning furniture myself with homemade lemon water, but sometimes I wonder if that might be too harsh.
Are there any other solutions besides vinegar water that I could try without having to worry too much? Sometimes I’d just like to be sure I’m not doing anything wrong while still keeping the furniture clean.

Are there any other solutions besides vinegar water that I could try without much thought?Yes, generally mild oils such as linseed oil or specially formulated natural-based furniture oils are good alternatives. These often have cleaning properties while also nourishing the wood. However, these oils should be used sparingly and at recommended intervals (for example, every few months), as too frequent application can leave the surface feeling greasy.
Wiping with a slightly damp microfiber cloth is often enough to remove dust without needing additional products.
It is important to always test a small, inconspicuous area first before applying any new cleaning solution to the entire piece of furniture.
I love my HEMNES furniture and take care of it with a mixture of water and a few drops of organic dish soap! It works great! 😊
Tip: Wipe it down with a dry cloth afterward so nothing soaks in. Just make sure not to use any harsh cleaners, and your furniture will stay beautiful for a long time!
Give it a try—it’s even fun when you see how well the furniture holds up!
