Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Brimnes bed at home with built-in drawers that are unfortunately a bit stiff or sometimes stick. I want to repair or at least maintain the drawers myself to fix the problem permanently. My question to the community is: What tools and aids are best suited to make repairing the drawers of the IKEA BRIMNES easier? I already have several screwdrivers and a hammer, but I wonder if there are special tools that can improve access or simplify adjusting the drawer slides. I’m also interested in tips on how to best assess possible damage or wear on the rails and rollers. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

A sturdy Phillips screwdriver is essential

Of course, but honestly: who relies solely on a screwdriver for IKEA drawers? Especially with Brimnes, you often notice that it’s not just about screws, but also about the sometimes stubborn interaction of plastic parts and the rails. I think it’s worth having a small set of files or pliers to touch up wear marks or make slight adjustments to parts. Sometimes a bit of improvisation with tools helps more than just the standard ones.

I agree, especially if parts catch or seem to jam. However, you should be careful not to damage plastic trims and tracks. Small files and pliers are definitely part of an extended basic toolkit if you frequently repair furniture, but for one-time repairs, screwdrivers, lubricants, and a bit of patience usually suffice.

For those who prefer to be precise: I recommend, in addition to the tools already mentioned, a set of small clamps or locking pliers.

These can help temporarily secure the track pieces when realigning the mechanism. Often, the plastic rollers or guide rails are a bit stiff because they are slightly warped. Using clamps allows you to hold them firmly in the correct position while tightening the screws again. Investing in these small helpers is definitely worthwhile, as it significantly improves the quality of the repair.

Also, a small set of dowel pins or thin needles can sometimes unlock a latch more easily than a regular screwdriver.

My summary:
- Screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead)
- Allen keys
- Lubricant (silicone)
- Small pliers and files
- Clamps/locking pliers
- Measuring tape
With these, you are well equipped for most repairs on BRIMNES drawers.

One more small note regarding troubleshooting BRIMNES drawers:

You should always start with a visual inspection to check if the drawer slides are properly installed, if the drawer runners are bent or dirty, or if any screws are loose. Often, complaints arise because the external function feels problematic, but misalignment is actually the cause. A protractor or a laser level is helpful for these checks, especially when you need to reinstall the drawer precisely.

Regarding tools: I’d like to add a quick note about Torx screwdrivers, as IKEA sometimes uses these screws. A small multitool can also be useful when you need to reach a screw quickly but a regular screwdriver doesn’t fit.

Sometimes small aids like craft mats or felt pads can make a big difference during installation by preventing excessive friction on the drawer. Investing in good tools pays off in the long run.
